It will highlight the work of many unjustly neglected female thinkers and contribute to the understanding of European traditions of political justice and the origins of our political institutions.Read moreRead less

War and terrorism feature prominently in popular, political and scholarly perceptions of Australia's colonial past and its geopolitical future. Our understanding of what constitutes war and terrorism emerged from a long colonial and conceptual history of Western international and political thought. The national and community benefits of this program of research derive precisely from its ability to link the uniqueness of Australia's colonial history to its global context, and to use both to provide new insight into current debates on terrorism and security that are integral to Australia's capacity to interpret itself to the rest of the world.Read moreRead less
Imagining globalisation: The world and nation in Chinese Communist Party ideology. Since the late 1990s, there has been intense interest in globalisation among leaders and theorists of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). These debates on globalisation represent an important development in the Party's ideology and provide an insight into the way in which it formulates its claim to legitimacy. This project will analyse these debates in the context of the Party's ideological history, and from the perspective of Western globalisation theory. The project will be of benefit to those institutions and individuals needing to understand changes in China's political elite's perception of the world and the Chinese nation's position within it.Read moreRead less
The First 'Liberals': Stoicism in the Enlightenment. This project will provide the first systematic study of the profound yet hitherto under-appreciated influence of classical Stoicism on the political thought of the European Enlightenment, particularly liberal thought. It will show that the Stoics provided the first properly developed theory of personal rights and were the first to successfully promulgate the values of universalism, impartiality, egalitarianism, tolerance and cosmopolitanism. It will then trace the transmission and interpretation of such values in early modern thought and demonstrate the manner in which Enlightenment figures like Locke, Smith, Wollstonecraft, Kant and Jefferson were directly influenced by the emancipatory political thought of the Stoics. Francesco Guicciardini as a Political Theorist. This project will examine the political writings of Francesco Guicciardini (1483-1540), aiming to disseminate Guicciardini's political theory in the English-speaking world and establish his importance as one of the great thinkers of the European political tradition. Simultaneously, it will uncover and reassess a number of his highly original theoretical insights, many still relevant today (particularly for contemporary republicanism). Guicciardini's political theory, in sharp contrast to that of his co-citizen and friend Machiavelli, received only limited attention, as his works were published only centuries after his death. This project will result in the first full-length monograph on the topic to appear in either English or Italian.Read moreRead less

The rise of the national economic interest. How did we come to think of economic welfare as an end in itself? This project examines the process by which wealth was disentangled from other national goals and the consequences, good and bad, of doing so.

This project seeks to examine the responses made by three of the most important conservative thinkers of the modern age to the crisis in liberal values and democratic principles that took place between 1900 and 1945 in Europe and elsewhere. The theorists in question are Max Weber, Oswalt Spengler and Carl Schmitt. A comparative study of their writings will be made, focussing upon the impact of their work on radical conservative groups in Germany and the policies formed by the latter. The study will conclude with an application of their findings to our understanding of the rise of a populist radical conservatism in contemporary Australia.Read moreRead less

This project will provide the first comprehensive survey and analysis of conservative ideas in Australia from the nineteenth century until the present day. It will examine the different forms of conservatism in Australia, consider how conservatism in Australia has changed over time and plot the relationship between conservatism and liberalism in Australia. The project will provide a definitive account of Australian conservatism thereby allowing for a much more sophisticated and nuanced picture of the Australian 'Right' than is currently possible. This study will lead to a fuller and richer appreciation of both Australian conservatism and Australian political culture.Read moreRead less
