    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $118,574.00
    Summary
I am an Infectious Diseases doctor working with Hepatitis B in the Top End of the Northern Territory. Summary
Up to 80% of out of hospital cardiac arrest patients do not receive bystander CPR –often because those at the scene do not have the required skills. Without immediate action the condition is fatal. Through my doctoral research I aim to investigate the best methods for providing a targeted approach of training basic life support to a group at high risk of these events -cardiac patients. I plan to develop and test the feasibility of incorporating this training into cardiac rehabilitation programs.

A Study Of The Impact Of Psychological Distress And Disadvantage On The Educational Outcomes Of Tertiary Students

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $70,511.00
    Summary
The study will examine differences in psychological distress over time between socio-economically disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged tertiary students and, in turn, the potential role of psychological distress in explaining any differences between these groups in course non-completion or completion. The knowledge gained from the study can inform programs and interventions designed to prevent or reduce tertiary student mental health problems and course non-completion.

Why Do People Develop Chronic Low Back Pain? An Investigation Of Brain Function As A Predictor Of Chronic Low Back Pain.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $96,631.00
    Summary
Chronic low back pain is the most disabling condition worldwide. Two objective measures of brain function, electrical signals of brain activity (electroencephalography), and attentional bias observed with eye tracking technology will be measured in a group of participants with acute back pain. These measurements will provide objective markers of brain function that may be predictive of the transition from acute to chronic low back pain, providing new opportunities for treatment.

An Exploration Of The Mechanisms Underlying A Novel Pain Biology Education Intervention (Explain Pain) In Reducing The Development Of Chronic Low Back Pain

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $106,057.00
    Summary
Chronic low back pain is a massive health problem in Australia. This research will investigate the underlying mechanisms of modulating one’s thoughts and beliefs about their pain via a psychoeducative intervention after an acute episode of low back pain. Exploring the mechanisms of this intervention is a crucial step towards understanding how explaining pain could reduce the development of chronic low back pain from an acute episode of low back pain.

Development, Validation And Implementation Of A Technical And Non-technical Skills Training Curriculum For Laparoscopic Appendicectomy Surgery

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $41,237.00
    Summary
A structured training curriculum will be developed that can teach novice surgeons in key surgical and decision-making skills required for laparoscopic appendectomy surgery (key-hole removal of the appendix). An assessment tool that can quantitatively evaluate performance during a laparoscopic appendectomy will be developed. Using this, the ability of the developed training curriculum to improve the performance of trainee surgeons during actual laparoscopic appendectomy surgery will be evaluated.
