The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research
Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.

Capital Offending: Income, Work and Crime in Australia’s Convict Era. At least 60 per cent of Australia’s current prison population has been in prison before. By contrast a mere 18 per cent of transported convicts were re-incarcerated following release. This project aims to use information on the bank accounts maintained for convicts while under sentence to measure the relationship between capital formation and post-sentence marriage, migration and reconviction rates. This project aims to use information on the bank accounts maintained for convicts while under sentence to measure the relationship between capital formation and post-sentence marriage, migration and reconviction rates. It will look in particular at the extent to which skills, employment opportunities and asset accumulation enabled former transported convicts to go straight. It will also result in improved archival search engines enabling access for members of the public to internationally recognised record groups hitherto held by different institutions.Read moreRead less

Crime and change in urban communities: a longitudinal study of violence, community networks and the collective capacity for action. This project examines the community contexts that influence the spatial variation of violence over time. It will identify the structural conditions of the community that cause crime and the mediating effects of dynamic community processes. The results will identify the critical factors that lead to the persistence or cessation of violence.
The work and workings of the Masson family. The family is of crucial importance to the social and economic fabric of Australian society. To appreciate the family it is vital to realise how it has developed, that is, to understand its history. This project seeks, by studying a complex and intriguing family, to improve that understanding. It sheds light on how the family has been formed, how and why the relationships between its members have changed, how decisions as to who makes up the members ....The work and workings of the Masson family. Possessing the Dead: The Artful Science of Anatomy. This project has applied benefits which lie in its ability to stimulate and inform broad participation in an important contemporary national debate about the use and abuse of human remains. Medical authorities fear that, following the disclosure of abusive practices with the dead, public distrust will lead to fewer bodies being donated for post-mortem medical use. The project will engage in these debates, in both academic and non-academic forum ....Possessing the Dead: The Artful Science of Anatomy. The project will engage in these debates, in both academic and non-academic forums, to facilitate a deeper understanding of what needs to be taken into account in national initiatives to deter unethical practices with human remains and provide donors with greater confidence. Subversion and Dissent in the Third Reich. Through the new approach of analysing records of Germans put on trial by the Nazi regime for the crime of "subversion," for which an estimated 60,000 Germans were prosecuted, I will gain access to a hitherto neglected current of popular dissent and discontent within the Third Reich. My project will challenge the conventional view that German society in the Third Reich was overwhelmingly consensual, apart from a miniscule group of anti-Nazi resisters. The outcome will be a more nuanced, complex picture of German society revealing that many Germans exhibited an amibivalent mix of consensus and dissent toward the Nazi regime.Read moreRead less
The growth of toleration in a cosmopolitan society: Protestants in eighteenth-century Paris. In an international context in which religious conflict appears to be increasing, and an Australia where religious diversity is growing, understanding the historical and cultural roots of toleration is vital. This project will reinforce Australia's reputation for innovative and independent work in French and urban history, both areas where Australian scholars are well known internationally.
A History of Taiwan. As such, it shares democratic values with Australia. We also have strong trade and investment relationships with Taiwan. China's claim that Taiwan belongs to China has made our relationship with Taiwan difficult, though in fact we have a strong 'officially unofficial' relationship with the island. This history will substantially strengthen our understanding of this key Asia-Pacific partner both in government and among Australia's citizens.Read moreRead less
