How digital health interventions provide support across national borders in the ‘real world’ and lives of young people are key questions in the realisation of global health. Focused on sexual health and mental health interventions for marginalised young people, this DECRA project is a direct response to this concern. The project examines the promise of transnational digital health interventions from the perspective of these marginalised young people across two key sites: one high-income country (Australia) and one middle-income country (Philippines).Read moreRead less

This study will examine the expanded practice role of community mental health nurses in metropolitan, rural and remote community environments from the perspective of multiple stakeholders. The aims are to gain an understanding of current and potential roles of community mental health nurses, to develop, implement and evaluate an educational program that addresses identified knowledge deficits; and develop best practice guidelines that define the scope and boundaries of their role. The study, which emphasises the specific needs of community mental health nurses employed in different geographical environments, will contribute to ensuring a high standard of care for people experiencing a mental illness.Read moreRead less
Deeper and broader life cycle risk assessment - extending the frontier for hybrid methodologies. This project is about combining detailed and global perspectives of environmental health risk from different fields of planning practice. It aims to improve the depth and breadth of the types of information used by government regulators and the community in decisions about the development of capital works.
Enhancing Hypnotic Responding with Oxytocin. Although hypnosis has been studied for over a 100 years, little is understood about the neuroscience of hypnosis. This project represents the first investigation of the neural mechanisms underpinning hypnosis. At an applied level, this project has the potential to markedly increase the capacity for Australians to benefit from medical and psychological hypnosis. This project represents the first investigation of the neural mechanisms underpinning hypnosis. At an applied level, this project has the potential to markedly increase the capacity for Australians to benefit from medical and psychological hypnosis. Hypnosis has been shown to assist in many medical and psychological conditions, and by developing the means to increase hypnotic responding, this project can directly enhance the physical and psychological health of Australians.Read moreRead less
A Three-Dimensional Ultra-Wideband Microwave Method Based On Multiple Antennas For Early Detection Of Breast Cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death among women in Australia. In 2003, it killed 2,713 women in Australia and approximately 400,000 worldwide. Despite significant advances, current breast screening methods still suffer from several limitations. They may miss as many as 15% of cancers. Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death among women in Australia. In 2003, it killed 2,713 women in Australia and approximately 400,000 worldwide. Despite significant advances, current breast screening methods still suffer from several limitations. They may miss as many as 15% of cancers. Inconclusive results are common, leading to invasive, expensive and painful follow-up tests such as biopsies. About 75% of such biopsies are found to be negative, and this is a major deterrent for women in undertaking breast screening. The proposed project contributes to the cause of finding a more reliable breast cancer detection method, and hence, saving thousands of lives each year.Read moreRead less
Improving road safety: advanced hybrid vehicle-based technology for monitoring driver drowsiness. Innovative technology geared towards reducing road accidents and fatalities (for improving public health) will constitute major socio-economic benefit to Australia. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau notes fatigue as a major cause of road accidents (2006). The World Health Organisation dedicated World Health Day 2004 to road safety and emphasized the importance of combating fatigue ('Road Safety is no Accident'). This research will develop an innovative driver drowsiness detecting technology. With drowsiness attributable to substantial road fatalities, this technology aims to reduce this emotional and socio-economic burden on the community, contributing to national and community benefit by providing a safer road environment.Read moreRead less

Our vision is for Australian children to be healthy, educated and connected. This Centre will integrate child health, education, and digital and social connectedness, innovating across disciplines to meet Australia’s ongoing challenges of supporting young children growing up in a rapidly changing digital age. The Centre’s world-leading team investigates children’s digital practices through three interconnected research programs supported by a longitudinal family cohort study and children’s technology laboratories. The Centre will address tensions in a contested field to inform government and non-government policy, technology innovation, and develop programs and guidelines for children, families, educators and technology developers. Effects of prosthesis design on bone remodelling and longevity of dental restorations. The project targets both the 'Promoting and Maintaining Good Health' and 'Advanced Materials' designated research priority areas. The research will underpin Australia's leading role on some emerging interdisciplinary frontiers of biomechanics, biomaterials, health sciences and biomedical software. The development of computer aided clinical plan will help optimise dental restorations for 'long-term success'. The benefit will be to improve the ongoing performance and longevity of dental restoration, which complies with the highly demanding national goal of 'ageing well'. The study will also provide a new means to improve the therapy effect for many young Australians' effort towards a 'healthy start to their life'.Read moreRead less
The Power of Causal Attributions: Genetic Essentialist Biases and Health. Great advancements in the science of genetics are accompanied by increased public propensity to attribute causality to the genes for diverse outcomes such as abilities, social group differences, attitudes, and diseases. These genetic attributions activate cognitive biases termed Genetic Essentialist Biases, which have been shown to instigate a variety of deleterious outcomes. The project will evaluate hypothesized detrimental effects of genetic attributions on actual health behaviours, endorsement of health policies, and disease related stigma. Furthermore, it will test interventions designed to reduce the negative effects of such attributions on attitudes, beliefs, intentions, and behaviours related to a common disease. Read moreRead less

The aim of this research is the utilisation of gas expanded liquids (GXLs) in technology platforms based on the principles of process intensification (PI). In order to facilitate the attainment of project objectives a comprehensive investigation of the fundamental properties of GXLs, and their interactions is proposed. A significant component of the programme is expected to be to use the knowledge obtained to facilitate the development of scale-up protocol for PI based methodologies, with particular emphasis on the production of biomaterials. GXLs technology is frontier technology with regard to the biomaterials sector.Read moreRead less
