Research indicates dissatisfaction with the quality of information provision amongst women with breast cancer and their families, particularly in rural and regional areas. Information and decision-support needs vary depending on disease stage, education, age, location, and ethnicity. Customised, in-time information access is critically important to BreastCare Victoria and the Breast Cancer Action Group as it impacts significantly on health and life-style decisions. This joint project analyses user needs, assesses and describes resources in user-sensitive ways, and designs and prototypes an intelligent portal that provides differentiated access to breast cancer resources online. It also advances general understandings of intelligent information provision.

This project aims to develop a theoretical framework for sensing and detecting human activities based on wireless radio signals. The framework advances the state-of-the-art by discovering the fundamental theory, and defining a set of principles to guide practical system design. The framework will be validated and its scientific merit demonstrated through building several applications such as contactless human activity detection and vital signs monitoring. This should benefit existing hospital and clinical patient services and promote home-care and self-care services at nationwide.Read moreRead less
Social network sites for ambivalent socialisers: the case of smoking cessation. The aim of this project is to understand the potential of electronically-mediated engagement to support groups of ambivalent socialisers, and through this develop and evaluate new approaches to the application of social network technologies to smoking cessation.

This project addresses unsolved issues of usability of e-health information systems across diverse stakeholder communities that need to coordinate to deliver the expected revolution in patient-centred health care. The project will help realise the Nation's large investment in e-health by improving the likelihood of system acceptance, thus making a significant contribution to facilitating the important institutional transformations expected of these systems. The timeliness, depth and breadth of the study will yield outcomes that will enhance Australia's research reputation. This project directly addresses the 'smart information use' and 'promoting and maintaining good health' national research prioritiesRead moreRead less

A group’s knowledge and reasoning processes are rarely conducted or recorded systematically; a problem particularly pressing for medical decisions made by multidisciplinary teams. This project will perform the first integration of knowledge management principles with group reasoning process models to create an online environment for enhancing the quality of group decisions and their documentation. The online environment will help medical teams use documented and non-documented knowledge when more than one medical condition is present and no formal guidelines are applicable. The project advances theories of knowledge in groups and is extendable to any deliberations on complex problems.Read moreRead less
Growing old and staying connected: touch screen technology for ameliorating older people’s experience of social isolation. Social isolation affects many older people. This project investigates novel technologies to prevent and to ameliorate social isolation experienced by older adults. This project will implement and trial a software application over an 18 month period, using a 3G connected touch-screen tablet, and evaluate its impact on alleviating social isolation.
Development of Knowledge Discovery for High Dimensional Biomedical Data. The recent progress in experimental techniques of molecular genetics has made available a wealth of genome data and raised the interest for analysis of DNA sequences. As the human and mouse genome projects are in a phase of systematic sequencing, computational tools based on concepts used in science fields have recently played a prominent role. Significant contributions to this project will increasingly depend upon original application and development of algorithms for the analysis of genomic data, and of the computational systems that support them. These challenges have fostered major progress in computer science, leading to collaborative research of global significance.Read moreRead less

The costs of pathology services in Australia are growing by at least $60 million per year. As the result of the recent "pap smear scandals", quality of pathology services has come under tight public scrutiny. Industry reports indicate the lack of analysis of the consistency of pathology tests ordering, underdeveloped models for communication between providers, and lack of alert, reminder, and follow-up systems for pathology tests. This research investigates the issues of planning, design, implementation, and monitoring of an integrated IT-based decision support system aimed at improving the dynamics and process flow in order to satisfy the demands for high quality pathology services.Read moreRead less
