Improving the physical and oral health of people with severe mental illness: using Normalisation Process Theory to support new practices. The physical health of people with severe mental illness is extremely poor, often due to inadequate attention to their health needs by health professionals in primary care and the public mental health system. This project will focus on how practices can be changed to improve the health of this population and increase their access to preventative healthcare.
Safety and resiliency at home: voices of children who live with fear. Finding out what can help children feel safer who are currently living in households where there is family violence will enable early intervention for better outcomes for such children. This research is significant because it will focus on targeting appropriate responses by listening to the views of children themselves and hence finding out what is really helpful for them to build resiliency. This is important to the work of a ....Safety and resiliency at home: voices of children who live with fear. Finding out what can help children feel safer who are currently living in households where there is family violence will enable early intervention for better outcomes for such children. This research is significant because it will focus on targeting appropriate responses by listening to the views of children themselves and hence finding out what is really helpful for them to build resiliency. This is important to the work of a key family welfare agency (Berry St) but it also has benefit for health and welfare workers throughout Australia. Appropriate early intervention will not only help the families concerned but will strengthen Australia's economic and social fabric, a priority goal of the national research agenda.Read moreRead less

Understanding and strengthening the way in which universal health services are provided to pregnant women, children and families has the potential to impact over a million Australian families annually. The findings of this study will have national application as federal, state and territory governments work towards implementing a national approach to child and family health services. The findings will inform effective multidisciplinary collaboration and service integration, address service gaps and duplication and lead to increased access to services. This study will generate new knowledge about characteristics of organisations, service delivery and professions that facilitate or hinder innovation.Read moreRead less
Enhancing health literacy to optimise health equality across Victorian communities. Health literacy—the ability to seek, understand and use health information—is a major influence on equitable health outcomes for Australians. This project will take a fresh approach to health literacy to understand vulnerable members of our community and develop supports and interventions that aim to assist services to reduce health inequalities.
Retirement activity planning: a randomised controlled trial. Retirement is a life transition where people must rethink the way they use their time, but little thought is given to planning for this. This project will assess the effect of systematic pre-retirement activity planning on use of time after retirement, with an emphasis on physical activity and sedentary behaviours.
Beyond the Workforce Crisis: Advancing Conceptual Understanding in Rural and Remote Health. This research will document a theoretical framework for understanding how and why rural health differs. Understanding the causes of rural health issues will lead to more effective strategies in rural health education, research, policy, and practice. This framework has benefit to national, state and local policies and programs in rural health across the country because it will provide understanding of what ....Beyond the Workforce Crisis: Advancing Conceptual Understanding in Rural and Remote Health. This research will document a theoretical framework for understanding how and why rural health differs. Understanding the causes of rural health issues will lead to more effective strategies in rural health education, research, policy, and practice. This framework has benefit to national, state and local policies and programs in rural health across the country because it will provide understanding of what works, why it works and what else is needed. Contributing to understanding the rural health context is key to improving rural health curriculum, designing meaningful research, supporting practitioners appropriately and developing rural health policies that increase the workforce, access to services and the overall rural health status.Read moreRead less

As organisational representatives get to know one another trust may develop permitting a greater degree of collaboration. In Victoria, the Primary Care Partnerships Strategy process aims to strengthen the relationships between agencies in alocal areas to improve collaboration and achieve services that operate in an integrated way in the provision of services to consumers. It is about strengthening the system of care. The aim of this study is to understand how people within a primary care system build and maintain relationships of trust between individuals and between organisations. Individuals will be interviewed to learn how they experience trust and related issues, documents will be analysed to learn about the policy and organisational environments of trust relationships, and the Trust Evaluation Scale used to measure the factors associated with trust over a two year period. The outcomes of this study will be an understanding of how organisations establish the relationships that allow them to collaborate effectively. In particular it will help us understand how they can be encouraged to share the same protocols and procedures, to share information, and become more skilful at managing organisational differences, and it will provide a deeper understanding of relationships between primary health care organisations and the strategies that can help individuals and organisations create trust and collaborate.Read moreRead less

The workforce model will inform government health workforce and health services planning, with the promise of improving access to best practice care for persons with diabetes, and potentially other chronic conditions, that represent the dominant Australian health burden. It also will inform education and training of health professionals and support a more flexible response to health workforce needs. Given projected health work force shortages, flexibility in responding to health care needs will be crucial to maintaining health system capacity. The model supports system level change that will enable improved population health outcomes, reduce preventable hospital admissions and deliver production gainsRead moreRead less
