Australian researchers have made key
contributions in this area, particularly with reference to one mature and commonly adopted agent architecture known as BDI (Belief, Desire, Intention). To make this technology suitable for use in advanced applications, it has to be provided with robust and predictable behaviour. This project will address that need by designing and implementing a novel agent language for BDI, based on contributions using transactional concepts for agents developed at The University of Melbourne. This will contribute to the development of robust and predictable agent software, that can be used in complex and large scale applications of the future.

The project aims to develop an automatic activity recognition system for cognitive aid of dementia and stroke victims. The ‘Smart Glasses’ system will be based on sensors embedded in glasses and machine learning techniques to automatically detect the activity being performed by a patient, and provide feedback. Sufferers will regain independence and autonomy by improving safety awareness around the home; carers will be provided real-time information of patient safety status or adverse events; rehabilitation professionals will be able to use feedback to refine a patient’s program and maximise quality and safety of ambulatory rehabilitation care; and patients will improve rehabilitation outcomes through tailored treatment.Read moreRead less
An integrated model for assessing health effects of nanoparticle inhalation. This project aims to examine the associated risks of nanoparticle inhalation on heath by developing a toxicological predictive tool for health risk assessment. The outcomes of this research will lead to greatly improved preventative measures, thereby reducing occupational diseases and the health socio-economic burden of Australia.
A Multiscale Modelling Platform for Nanoparticle Inhalation Risk Assessment. This project aims to explore the health risks caused by nanoparticle inhalation and its penetration through respiratory mucus and tissue cells. Exposure to nanoparticles has the potential to cause serious and possibly fatal health effects. An understanding of nanoparticle toxicology would enable us to appropriately protect the public’s health and safety. The project plans to consider human respiratory anatomy and physiology and use advanced computer modelling and experimental techniques to evaluate the health risk of exposure to the burgeoning number of nanomaterials found in consumer products. The expected outcome of the project is a predictive tool that determines nanoparticle exposure risk and its health consequences.Read moreRead less

The overall goal is to produce technologies that will enable the home to be a ?intelligent, caring advisor? and provide operational effectiveness for people with decreasing functional capacity (eg aged). It can monitor and support activities of varying complexity without compromising a normal lifestyle, enabling people of varying abilities to be independent, whilst being cared for by their homes. This caring will range from advice systems for detecting hazardous situations and alerting the user, through to detecting subtle deviations from complex, normal activities over significant periods of time (such as caused by the onset of an illness).Read moreRead less
