In the Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase I, detailed data were obtained from a community-based patient cohort between 1993 and 2001. There is strong evidence that diabetes in Australia is changing rapidly. To provide up to date data to health care providers and government, to confirm observations made in Phase I and to venture into new areas, Phase II began in 2008. Summary
The PANDORA study is a longitudinal birth cohort study recruited from a clinical register of Northern Territory women with diabetes in pregnancy (DIP). We will also recruit a comparator group of mothers without DIP and babies. Follow-up of mothers and infants to 3 years post-delivery will be from medical records, questionnaires and clinical assessment. Rates of progression to type 2 diabetes will be assessed among mothers, and growth, feeding patterns and diabetes risk markers among infants.

We have established the PROPHECY Study to assess the levels of complications in Aboriginal people with diabetes; to understand the way that these complications occur, and identify what clinical, social and genetic factors could predict who will get those complications to guide clinical management and prevention.

Summary
Cardiovascular disease (CVD, heart disease and stroke) is the leading cause of death in women aged 65 and over. Counter-intuitively, androgens may be as, or even more important, than estrogens in determining CVD risk and all-cause mortality in women, but this is yet to be verified. We will document blood levels of androgens in women aged 70+ and determine whether androgens are associated with CVD and death in this large cohort of elderly well women.

During youth, cells in our body undergo a continual process of self-renewal, known as mitosis, where cells divide and accurately provide equal number of chromosomes into each daughter cell. Closed loop technology for automating the delivery of insulin to patients with Type 1 diabetes has the potential to improve the lives of many with the disease. Though early prototypes are currently under evaluation in small studies, no studies have yet to date applied the technology in a large scale randomised trial. We propose to undertake such a study in order to demonstrate the utility of this technology and facilitate its eventual routine and widespread use in the community in the future.

Summary
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-threatening genetic condition affecting Australian children. As well as repeated lung infections, children with CF develop insulin deficiency and eventually diabetes. The CF-IDEA trial (Cystic Fibrosis – Insulin Deficiency, Early Action) will determine whether starting insulin treatment before the onset of diabetes (earlier than current practice) will improve the health of children with CF by improving body weight and lung function.
