Historically, economic evaluations of health care treatment and preventive programs developed for adolescents have failed to incorporate adolescent values about their preferred health outcomes. This project will apply a novel approach known as Best-Worst Scaling to ascertain adolescent specific values for health states for incorporation into economic evaluation, thereby enabling the views of adolescents to be incorporated directly into the health care priorities decision-making process.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in Australia with a disproportionate burden borne by Aboriginal populations. Despite the existence of proven treatments, adherence to therapy is a major problem. Based on the use of well-established survey methods involving patients, GPs and pharmacists the study seeks to better understand the reasons for non-adherence and why different strategies to address this may or may not be effective.

The research will quantify the cost and quality of life impact of fragility fractures in Australia. The study design is based on an international study - International Costs and Utilities Related to Osteoporotic Fracutres Study (ICUORS) that aims to investigate the impact of osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, spine and wrist. Results can be used to compare cost-effectiveness of different drugs and lifestyle interventions aiming to decrease the burden of osteoporosis in Australia.
