Program evaluation of the osteoarthritis awareness hub. Persons with osteoarthritis generally have poor knowledge about their disease and its appropriate management. The aim of this project is to evaluate whether improved knowledge, and management decisions of persons with osteoarthritis, can ultimately lead to improved health outcomes.
Selectivity enhancement in separation science using responsive materials. Increasing public demand for quality products from the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food industries requires access to innovative methods of chemical analysis. This project will establish a new class of separation materials of enhanced selectivity and resolving power for the fast, sensitive and reliable analysis of these products.
Critical windows: understanding changes in eating and physical activity over the transition from secondary school to young adulthood. This project will explain changes in eating, physical activity and sedentary behaviour during the critical period of transition from secondary school to young adulthood. It will provide important information on how we can assist adolescents to maintain a healthy lifestyle over a time characterised by several major life changes.
Using metallothioneins as a model for understanding cellular and biochemical interactions between neurons and astrocytes within the brain. This research will reveal some of the changes that occur in the relationship between neurons and astrocytes as a consequence injury, aging or disease to the human brain. In national terms, it will contribute to the concerted effort by Australian scientists to understand how and why neurons die following brain injury or in neurodegenerative diseases. These are significant community issues in both economical and social terms. Furthermore, this research contributes directly to the Designated National Research Priorities by identifying some of the earliest cellular processes associated with aging or disease of the brain, and will provide clues to promoting healthy aging.Read moreRead less

Does binocular vision training enhance literacy among primary school children with poor reading? One in ten Australian children can not read well despite adequate intelligence and opportunity. This project aims to find out the extent that these reading problems reflect poor binocular vision (the eyes not working well together) and evaluate new treatments.
Facilitatory and inhibitory mechanisms during interlimb coordination in young and older adults. The project seeks to understand how people coordinate their limbs and the factors which limit and enhance this capacity. This is of critical importance because coordination is a dominant deficit in aging and in patients suffering brain insult and neurodegenerative diseases. Disruption of this capacity compromises individual work productivity, mobility and independence. Proficient motor functioning is ....Facilitatory and inhibitory mechanisms during interlimb coordination in young and older adults. Proficient motor functioning is an important lifestyle factor as humans age and deficits in coordinated muscle activity will increase the risk of falls which are the leading cause of injury in elderly adults. Identification of changes in brain processes involved in interlimb coordination will allow for the development of strategies to improve motor functions in the aged.Read moreRead less
Hierarchical assembly of graphene oxide nanoparticles as bionanointerface. This project aims to develop a state-of-the-art fabrication methodology to develop large area polymer/graphene hybrid nanoparticle patterns to precisely modulate cell guidance and regeneration by exogenous electrical stimulation. However, their applicability has been limited due to difficulties in patterning and ....Hierarchical assembly of graphene oxide nanoparticles as bionanointerface. This project aims to develop a state-of-the-art fabrication methodology to develop large area polymer/graphene hybrid nanoparticle patterns to precisely modulate cell guidance and regeneration by exogenous electrical stimulation. Polymers and graphene have emerged as the main contenders for the development of soft biocompatible platforms. However, their applicability has been limited due to difficulties in patterning and their consequent integration under physiological conditions. This project will advance both fundamental and practical knowledge at the forefront of nanotechnology and cell biology, whilst providing training to the research community at the cutting edge of science. The project will also deliver intellectual property, which will position Australia at the forefront of bionanotechnology.Read moreRead less
Age-related changes in brain activation: Indicators of deficiency, maturity, or compensation? It is well established that cognitive and motor performance decline with advancing age. It is well established that cognitive and motor performance decline with advancing age. With an aging population, it is of significant socioeconomic importance to facilitate healthy ageing. To promote functional independence in everyday life for as long as possible, a better understanding of brain changes associated with aging is essential. The project will use state-of-the-art neurophysiological techniques to examine individual differences in the brain's response to cognitive aging and their association with task performance. Determination of why some individuals show resilience to aging will inform the development of intervention techniques to improve cognitive and motor functions in the aged.Read moreRead less

Interstellar scintillation, ISS, is a revolutionary new and powerful technique which we will use to study the highest brightness temperature cores of radio quasars with unprecedented angular resolution, and probe the interstellar medium of our Galaxy in a way not previously possible. The combination of scintillation and conventional VLBI allows imaging with light-month to light-year resolution across the known Universe. Scintillation observations are challenging basic synchrotron physics by uncovering quasar cores with temperatures possibly as high as 10^15 K, and lifetimes many times longer than theory. The Ceduna and Hobart telescopes are cornerstones of our scintillation and VLBI proposals.
