A Multi-component Supermarket Intervention To Promote Healthy Eating

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $547,005.00
    Summary
Most food in Australia is bought in supermarkets, and so there is a public health imperative for supermarkets to encourage healthy food purchases. This proposal is to conduct a randomised-controlled trial in 10 supermarkets to test the impact of a package of interventions that improve the healthiness of the supermarket environment. Intervention components were chosen by the retail, government and academic partners based on feasibility, sustainability and positive results from our pilot studies.

Improving Adolescent Gate-keeping And Help-seeking For Risky Drinking And Depression: A Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $655,495.00
    Summary
Young people with mental health and substance use problems are reluctant to seek help. There is a significant gap in health promotion activities which specifically target help-seeking skills, particularly teaching friends to help friends to access treatment early. This project seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of a school-based intervention that focuses on improving adolescent gate-keeping and help-seeking skills for risky drinking and depression, using a cluster randomised controlled design.

Scheduling Frequent Opportunities For Outdoor Play – A Simple Approach To Increase Physical Activity In Childcare

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $355,955.00
    Summary
Australian preschool aged children are not sufficiently active, increasing their risk of a variety of health conditions. When at childcare, previous research has found that children are particularly activity during the first 10-15 minutes of outdoor play. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of changing the scheduling of periods of outdoor play within preschools.

Advancing Obesity Prevention And Control In Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $461,678.00
    Summary
This Fellow will make a significant contribution to the science of childhood obesity prevention. By interrogating high quality data from successful community based interventions the Fellow will identify key systemic components for effective chronic disease prevention. This information will then inform the evaluation of the $80m multiple community Victorian Prevention Community Model involving >25% of the State’s population.

Enhancing Understanding Of The Combined Influence Of Physical Activity And Sleep As CVD Risk Factors

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $476,728.00
    Summary
Physical activity and sleep both impact health but are rarely considered as joint influences of health. I lead a research group that combines epidemiology and intervention research to generate unique insights to better understand how these behaviours jointly impact health and develop, evaluate and disseminate interventions to improve these behaviours.

Reducing Unintended Pregnancies Among Female Sex Workers In Kenya Using MHealth: A Randomised Controlled Trial

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $92,161.00
    Summary
This research aims to reduce the high rates of unintended pregnancy experienced by female sex workers (FSW) in Kenya. It involves the development of a health promotion program delivered by mobile phone (mHealth intervention) to improve FSWs’ knowledge of SRH and reduce their risk of unintended pregnancy. The intervention will be trialled with 860 FSWs from 86 sex work venues in Mombasa. If effective, it can be implemented to improve women’s health in many and diverse settings.

Promotion Of Self-help Strategies For Sub-threshold Depression Via The Internet: Randomised Controlled Trial

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $91,573.00
    Summary
Depressive symptoms are common, impair individual functioning, and may develop into a full depressive disorder. Self-help for depressive symptoms is well-liked and often used, but some strategies are not as effective as others. This project will test the feasibility of promoting helpful self-help strategies to those with a high level of depressive symptoms, using the internet. The aim is to reduce the overall level of depressive symptoms and the number developing a full depressive disorder.
