Designing future technology to foster psychological wellbeing has the potential to affect population-wide positive change. The design of software like apps or social media, can impact things like cyber-bullying, depression, or even foster resilience. This project aims to connect experts across multiple disciplines (psychology, technology and policy) to develop pioneering methods, knowledge, and strategies that will allow future technologies to play an active role in improving health, performance, and quality of life for all Australians, through research-based design for wellbeing. In doing so, Australia will lead the way on the technological front in a growing global initiative to improve the wellbeing of nations.Read moreRead less
Affective sensing technology for the detection and monitoring of depression and melancholia. This project will develop reliable and affective sensing technology and evaluate it as an objective measure of depressive disorders; a leading cause of disability worldwide. Outcomes will significantly support and aid clinicians in their diagnosis and treatment, thus providing a major breakthrough with significant research, healthcare and commercial possibilities.

Wireless networks, hand held devices and associated applications are key emerging technologies. This project will investigate the implementation of wireless devices and applications for patient administration at Southern Health in two ward settings (neurology and neurosurgery) at Monash Medical Centre. A wireless infrastructure is being installed and clinical staff will be able to conduct their rounds with notebook computers or PDAs at the patients' bedside. The research team will assess the acceptance of the new devices and applications by nursing and medical staff. Outcomes from the project will include a set of guidelines and techniques for introducing and managing technology-enhanced patient administration and clinical systems.Read moreRead less
Understanding the impact of enterprise system use on system performance. To optimise organizational benefits, resource intensive enterprise systems must be appropriately used by all user cohorts. This study investigates the impact of system-use on system success. System-use patterns derived for all key user cohorts across the lifecycle phases will create management matrices to assist organizations maximise system-use.
Information support tools for the trauma patient pathway. Processes such as critical supply chain management, disaster management, and trauma patient pathways need people, resources, and information to be smoothly transferred between jurisdictions, but problems can occur at each handover. This project focuses on the prehospital to hospital patient pathway and aims to develop technologies, devices, and displays to support more effective handover of patients between jurisdictions. The project will ....Information support tools for the trauma patient pathway. The project will conduct field research, design activities, and simulation-based evaluation of prototypes with healthcare professionals. Expected outcomes are designs, technologies, and guidelines that will generalise to other multi-jurisdictional processes. Benefits are safer and more efficient handover processes.Read moreRead less

The project aims to equip future robots with empathy by developing computational models which can leverage from verbal and non-verbal cues. With recent advances in artificial intelligence research, robots now have better cognitive and function skills, but they lack socio-emotional skills. Since these robots are expected to provide assistance to humans across different domains including rehabilitation, education and health care, empowering them with empathetic abilities is important for their success. The project will advance fundamental research in machine learning, affective computing and artificial intelligence to model human behavior, personality traits and emotions for an empathetic human-robot interaction.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop multimodal affective sensing techniques that can sense very subtle expressions in human moods and emotions. Much research in affective computing has investigated ways to improve the sensitivity of affect sensing approaches, resulting in more accurate estimates of affective states such as emotions or mood. What remains unsolved so far is the issue of specificity. This project will address this issue through novel analyses of very subtle cues in facial and vocal expressions of affect embedded in a multimodal deep learning framework. Current approaches can successfully assist in binary classification tasks. This project will tackle the much more difficult problem of developing advanced affective sensing technology to simultaneously handle homogeneous and heterogeneous affect classes as well as continuous range estimates of affect intensity.Read moreRead less
