Electronic medication management systems are being implemented across the Australian health system. These systems have the potential to improve patient outcomes, but also have risks. This research will examine these benefits and risks in two vulnerable populations: children and the elderly. Novel research methods will be used to evaluate high risk medicine use and associated errors; and design interventions to improve their safety in two paediatric hospitals and 75 aged care facilities.
Smart Evidence-based Software For Latent Tuberculosis Infection Decision Support

Intelligent decision-assistance software will be developed to aid clinicians and patients to make complex decisions about tuberculosis diagnosis and management. The software will be fully integrated into existing medical record technologies, and make use of the information that is contained in the medical record. Recent advances in high-throughput, next-generation, DNA sequencing allows biologists to simultaneously analyse the differences in thousands of different genes across affected and unaffected individuals. However, it produces an overwhelming amount of data and making sense of this deluge of data is a current challenge. Overcoming this challenge will enable scientific discoveries of pathogenic variants of disease, potentially providing an opportunity for targeted drug development.

Summary
Patients with multiple sclerosis experience relapses followed by disease remission. Recently, neuroplasticity, or the brain's innate ability to reorganise itself to maintain function after injury, has been thought to play a significant role in remission. We study patients with optic neuritis, which causes loss of vision, to understand visual parts of the brain change during recovery to enable patients to see again despite ongoing brain injury.

Cardiovascular disease and mental illness are leading causes of mortality and morbidity. They frequently co-occur in adulthood, but it is poorly understand how and when this relationship develops. The Hearts and Minds Study will examine how mental health (positive and negative) over a 10-year period impacts cardiovascular health at two important life course stages: early childhood and mid-adulthood. Findings will enhance understanding of cardiovascular and mental health in our community.
