The project will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of attitudes towards the environment within the region. Australia has a significant aid investment in the region and this is likely to grow as a result of the White Paper on overseas development aid. In Southeast Asia much of the aid effort addresses issues of sustainable resource management. In recent years Australia has shown a keen interest in India's evolution as a global power. This project seeks to deepen our national understanding by focusing on a key socio-cultural dimension of this evolution: the emergence through multiple media of lower caste voices in democratic politics and cultural practices in India. Through its study of lower castes' innovative use of print, electronic and digital media in effecting social and political change in this era of technological innovation and economic growth, the project highlights both the possibilities and limits of India's growth. This project aims to compare the representations of gender and sexuality on British and French exploratory voyages of the Pacific from the late eighteenth to the mid- nineteenth century. Starting from the islands of Samoa (Tcherkézoff ) and Vanuatu (Jolly), we will consider the centrality of gender and sexuality in categorizations of different ?races? or ?nations? and especially the distillation of the contrast between Polynesia and Melanesia. These voyages were foundational not just for enduring European visions of the Pacific but for Islander perceptions of and relations with Europeans, and later transformations of indigenous patterns of gender and sexuality.Read moreRead less

This project will build the requisite foundation to resolve whether variable climate change sparked the origins of humans and our great ape forebears. Scientists endeavor to recover ancient environmental records to examine this influential idea, but have lacked the means to do so at the scale of a human lifespan. This multidisciplinary effort will harness groundbreaking advances pioneered by our collaborative team to produce the first fine-scaled climate proxies from the teeth of humans’ closest living relatives. Documenting climate variation across diverse landscapes promises to transform studies of prehistoric ecosystems and past behaviour from omnipresent fossilised teeth, providing further insight into humanity’s unprecedented success.Read moreRead less
