Determination Of Diagnostic Molecular Profiles For Intraduct Lesions Of The Breast.

    Funder

    Funding Amount
    $308,400.00
    Summary
Breast cancer originates in cells within breast ducts. The introduction of Breast Screening for breast cancer has led to a dramatic increase in the diagnosis of breast cancer which is confined to these ducts and has not spread to surrounding tissue. This is known as 'ductal carcinoma in situ' or DCIS. It is evident that DCIS is variable in its tendency to give rise to more advanced breast cancer. However, currently our ability to predict the potential agressiveness of a particular DCIS is limited. In this research we are proposing to develop new methods for evaluation of DCIS that will more accurately predict clinical behaviour. An important adjunct is to ensure that these methods can be practically applied in a routine diagnostic setting. Achievement of the aims of this project will assist treatment planning for patients diagnosed with DCIS. It will also provide important information about breast cancers diagnosed as a consequence of breast screening.

Novel Microdevices For Controlled Blood And Skin Extraction

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $314,644.00
    Summary
Current blood sampling devices only create a puncture in the skin but have no capacity to collect blood while current tissue biopsies are not capable of repeated sampling in patients without the need for local anaesthesia or sutures. There is a need for clinically feasible devices to enable preventive strategies in the area of skin cancer and communicable diseases through facilitation of early detection, particularly in rural/remote areas where medical resources are limited.

Finding Clinical Predictors For The Underlying Pathology In Different Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) Syndromes

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $136,593.00
    Summary
Due to the ageing population in Australia it is predicted that the prevalence of dementia will increase four-fold by 2050. Developing disease-modifying therapies for dementia is therefore a priority, however we also need to be able to accurately identify patients for whom these therapies will be beneficial. Here we will develop strategies for identifying patients with particular protein abnormalities in their brain, the substrate of most therapeutic interventions.

Falling Insulin Requirements Study (FIRST) In Diabetic Pregnancy

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $107,764.00
    Summary
Falling insulin requirements in late pregnancy is thought to signify abnormal placental function and increased risk to mother and baby in diabetic pregnancies. As there is currently limited evidence in the literature, the proposed study aims to examine placental dysfunction in this group of women through monitoring adverse outcomes, serial ultrasound measurements, blood biomarkers and histopathology examination. Clinical Features, Neurophysiology And Histopathology Of Peripheral Neuropathy In Children With Mitochondrial Disease

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $56,200.00
    Summary
Peripheral neuropathies are frequently associated with mitochondrial diseases in children and cause progressive weakness and gait abnormalities and could result in loss of ambulation. This study aims to characterise the clinical spectrum and range of electrophysiological and histopathological abnormalities in the peripheral nerves of children with mitochondrial neuropathies to provide a resource that enables early diagnosis and implementation of rehabilitative measures.
