Primary care experts also need to act as ?direction finders? for research on ageing so that the right questions are addressed. All these groups are relatively under-funded and poorly connected. Sino-Australian neurogenetics initiative. This project will undertake large population studies to identify genes that are associated with motor neuron disease, schizophrenia and intracranial haemorrhage. The project will determine genetic markers, aid development of diagnostic tools and identify new therapeutic targets for these common heritable neurological diseases.

Summary
Over 100,000 children attend family day care in the homes of 12,000 providers in Australia. Family day carers work under challenging conditions and many carers leave the profession annually. The working conditions, mental health and job stress of family day carers and how their mental health may relate to quality of care has not been investigated. This PhD study will examine these issues and explore if and how a systems approach can improve family day carer mental health and job satisfaction.

Summary
The proposed study aims to determine the cumulative 10-year incidence and progression of the major eye diseases that threaten vision in older Australians, including age-related maculopathy, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The cumulative 5-year incidence of age-related hearing loss and prevalence of loss of smell will also be determined. The study will assess risk factors and associations with these diseases, using information collected at the baseline, 5-year and 10-year examination ....The proposed study aims to determine the cumulative 10-year incidence and progression of the major eye diseases that threaten vision in older Australians, including age-related maculopathy, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The cumulative 5-year incidence of age-related hearing loss and prevalence of loss of smell will also be determined. The study will assess risk factors and associations with these diseases, using information collected at the baseline, 5-year and 10-year examinations on medical history, ocular factors, vascular disease, smoking, diet, plus environmental and blood factors. The study aims to assess the impact of these sensory impairments on measures of dependence, quality of life, general health, age-related cognitive impairment, depression and on mortality. The study will be conducted in Katoomba on the cohort of residents from two postcode areas who originally attended the Blue Mountains Eye Study during the period 1992-4. Examinations will commence by May, 2002 and be completed by April, 2004. We hope to examine 2,032 of the original cohort of 3,654 people. This project will build on the data already collected by the Blue Mountains Eye Study, one of the most successful community surveys conducted in Australia. The 10-year follow-up period will provide increased statistical power and precision to assess the role of possible risk factors for eye disease already identified by the earlier baseline and 5-year studies of this population. Socio-economic determinants and health inequalities over the life course: Australian and English comparisons. Our multidisciplinary investigation will yield Australia's first major body of knowledge on the socio-economic determinants of health and health inequalities over the life course. It will point the way towards policies that can promote health and reduce the health inequalities experienced by disadvantaged individuals and families. It will indicate how improving the health of ageing Aus ....Socio-economic determinants and health inequalities over the life course: Australian and English comparisons. Our multidisciplinary investigation will yield Australia's first major body of knowledge on the socio-economic determinants of health and health inequalities over the life course. It will point the way towards policies that can promote health and reduce the health inequalities experienced by disadvantaged individuals and families. It will indicate how improving the health of ageing Australian men and women can increase productivity and reduce needs for health services during the rapid population ageing that lies ahead. Comparisons with England will inform policy choices.
