Summary
We will determine the value of targeting the interaction between a receptor unique to platelets, glycoprotein Ib, and two factors (XI and XII) in plasma involved in blood clotting, as a novel strategy to prevent clots that lead to heart attack-stroke. Our study is at the basic research-clinical interface and has the potential to improve our understanding of both bleeding in patients with Factor XI-XII defects and prevention of dangerous levels of clotting without affecting normal vessel repair.
Through this Australia Fellowship Prof Jackson aims to identify an entirely new approach to the treatment of heart attacks and stroke; namely the development of innovative blood clotting therapies that prevent the disease-causing effects of disturbed blood flow. Summary
Most human proteins are modified by the addition of complex sugar groups, which are important for the correct function of these key biological molecules. This fellowship will develop a suite of robust mass spectrometry glycoproteomic analytics for use in conjunction with clinical cohorts, model systems and in vitro biochemistry to investigate fundamental aspects controlling N-glycosylation in disease and translation to clinical diagnostics.
