The benefit of this project is the provision of an extensible leading edge technological platform for exploration of critical problems of Climate Change Adaptation (CCA). This will enable policy makers and social scientists to explore the complex interactions of different approaches to adaptation thus informing this critical area understanding. The research questions addressed will also provide more general benefits in the area of agent based modelling and simulation, facilitating principled modelling of more complex entities within simulations. Building on top of a platform with an existing large user base facilitates contributions to the extensible platform, and the application area of CCA, by a wide range of people.

The Virtual Geological Observatory: a four dimensional view into the Earth through deep-time data-mining. The Fellowship aims to reveal the underlying processes of plate tectonic cycles, paleogeography, sea-level change and the formation of ore deposits and hydrocarbon resources since the explosion of life during the Cambrian period. Using a mantle convection framework, we will discover how the cyclicity in mid-ocean ridge creation and the subduction dynamics associated with the aggregation and dispersal of Gondwana and Pangea has been driving plate tectonic cycles and cyclicity at the Earth's surface. A Virtual Geological Observatory will transform our understanding of this ancient world by fusing geodata-mining and high-performance computer simulation outputs in the plate-tectonic context.

Quality of Service-based Scheduling of e-Research Application Workflows on Global Grids. e-Research has the potential to offer Australia significant economic and social benefits as it enables researchers from different disciplines and organisations to engage in collaborative scientific investigation. In e-Research environments, users need to have secure access to remote resources owned by different organisations. Since these resources are not directly under the control of e-Research applications, they need to negotiate with resource providers for access time, duration, and the level of quality of service expected to make sure that the interlinked operations are performed as required. This project develops information and communications technologies that enable the creation of such e-Research environments.

Efficient and scalable middlewares are an important part of our current competitive economy. This is particularly important in Australia where production and population centres are spread over large distances. As a result, inefficiencies in web-based disparate businesses are likely to have a strong impact on the national economy. This project will provide an integrated framework and solutions to urgently needed integration problems faced by current industries. The development of a reliable and flexible infrastructure will benefit small and medium-scale enterprises, as they will be able to participate in large-scale supply chains and expand their business, without having to invest in expensive new computer systems and software.

A novel cooperative global information system for healthcare. This project will develop a global model for healthcare based on the groundbreaking Protocol Hypothesis Testing (PHT) system, allowing expert groups of clinicians to create and share knowledge across organizations. The PHT is a unique functioning knowledge management system that allows clinicians to record patient and treatment data as it is generated in clinical practice and applies scientific methods to generate clinical knowledge, all in real-time. The project will develop and test a framework for the PHT system to be used cooperatively by expert groups across virtual organizations, refining the PHT system in the process.
