Three-dimensional property ownership map base for smart urban land administration. This project aims to support smart urban land administration by upgrading a two-dimensional (2D) property ownership map base to a three-dimensional (3D) map base, using 3D digital data from regulatory subdivision processes. The map base coherently represents all land-based parcels, and provides valuable intelligence used to make land and property decisions. The 2D map base omits above and underground properties and infrastructure common in urban settings, forcing stakeholders to rely on fragmented data streams. The 3D map base will provide a connected, digital source of intelligence about urban property objects. This is expected to reduce social and economic risks and enable more intelligent city planning and management.Read moreRead less

Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and supporting electronics systems are required for monitoring of the uplift of the Earth's crust near the Lambert Glacier. This will lead to fundamental insights into the past and present-day mass-balance changes of the Antarctic
ice sheet. This research will provide critical data on the changes in the Antarctic ice sheet, a region where scientific information is currently poorly defined or lacking altogther. Combined with other geophysical data, the results of this project will produce, for the first time, constraints on the contribution of Antarctica to global ice and sea-level models.

It is essential for Australia's long-term planning and security that the effects of global warming on our nation's water resources and coastlines are quantified. Sea level variations projected into the future vary around Australia and have large uncertainties, yet the impacts have substantial social and financial ramifications for our community. Australia hasn't yet quantified accurately its critical water resources nor how they are changing. This proposal will address both these issues, providing for the first time valuable and accurate information for planning appropriate strategies to mitigate the impact of sea level rise and water storage on the Australian society.Read moreRead less

Climate change puts Australia at risk from sea level rise and an increase in the occurrence and intensity of droughts. We need to learn about issues concerning the water cycle that are still poorly understood, such as whether droughts cause a reduction in only surface water or also water stored in underground reservoirs and what happens to ocean waters when thermal expansion causes an increase in sea surface height in some regions but not others. This proposal will provide new and accurate scientific information on the risks of sea level rise through the effects of thermal expansion of the oceans, in particular in shallow coastal zones. It will help us to understand droughts, variations in water resources and groundwater recharge patterns.Read moreRead less
Land and property information in 3D. Australia’s population growth results in multiple uses and stacked villages in 3-dimensional (3D) arrays of buildings and facilities in cities. This project will facilitate use of 3D technologies to support the land market, streamline legal requirements, decrease delays and reduce costs for designing, planning, building and managing modern cities.

We plan to acquire a gigabit per second digital data recorder for geodesy and astronomy. We will develop a geodetic VLBI capability to provide independent confirmation of results from alternative techniques such as GPS and SLR and allow us to characterise and remove the systematic errors inherent in these systems. We will estimate motion at sites from the combination of VLBI, GPS, gravity and tide gauge data for geodynamic effects, such as post-glacial rebound and tectonic motion and global mean sea level change.
We will increase the density of southern radio sources used to define the International Celestial Reference Frame and investigate their structure and evolution. We will make high time resolution observations of young pulsars to study the phenomena of pulsar glitches and aid in the understanding of neutron star interiors.Read moreRead less

There is a continuing nation-wide decline in high school student enrolment in higher level mathematics and science. This is already leading to a reduction in the number of students undertaking university engineering programs in Australia and the situation is expected to worsen. This project is directed toward a better understanding of the reasons for the trend and the development of strategies to reverse it. It aims to 1. Evaluate the most effective strategies that increase student's interests and understanding of engineering and increase participation in engineering studies. 2. Develop an optimised national communication strategy for promoting engineering studies to secondary students.Read moreRead less
Precision inertial sensing with cold atoms. Many advances in our technology-driven society rely on precision measurement.
