Monotreme immune system provides insights into their evolutionary relationships. Genes of immunological importance will be cloned and characterised from the short-beaked echidna with the purpose of investigating the immune system in monotremes, gaining insights into the timing and order of evolutionary separation of the three extant mammalian groups:- the Prototherians (monotremes), the Metatherians (marsupials) and Eutherians (placentals), increasing understanding of the evolution of the verteb ....Monotreme immune system provides insights into their evolutionary relationships. Lungfish Paired Fins and the Origin of Limbs as an Evolutionary Novelty. This project will utilise a uniquely Australian animal, the lungfish, to address a hitherto unresolved problem of considerable scientific significance - how a fish fin evolved into a tetrapod (four-legged animal) limb. The Australian lungfish is the most primitive of the four surviving genera of lobe-finned fish and is recognised as the closest living ancestor to the tetrapods. It is listed as 'vulnerable' in its native habitat. Macquarie University, however, has the only captive breeding population of lungfish in the world. We are thus uniquely placed to address critically important questions concerning the evolution of fish into tetrapods. Read moreRead less
A new theoretical approach to pension fund economics, asset management and insurance. A new generation of sustainable pensions will be proposed, which can, in the long term, increase several times the level of pension payouts. The groundbreaking underlying theoretical approach suggests a paradigm shift and dramatic improvements in the performance of pensions and other long dated contracts in asset management and insurance.
Extreme Value Theory Approaches to Insurance in a Catastrophic Environment. Recent decades are marked by numerous significant natural (climate change) or man-made (financial crises) catastrophes, which have significantly altered the landscape of the insurance industry. These have potentially significant negative impacts on the availability and affordability of insurance, and hence on the capability and capacity of households and businesses to take risks and be competitive. This project endeavour ....Extreme Value Theory Approaches to Insurance in a Catastrophic Environment. This project endeavours to establish progressive approaches (using extreme value theory) to the challenges faced by insurance in such a catastrophic environment. They will enhance the financial stability and competitivity of the Australian economy, and further establish its global leadership in dealing with climate changes and catastrophes.Read moreRead less
Discovery of novel microRNA biogenesis and functional components. Discovery of novel microRNA components will provide new strategies for confronting a diverse array of challenges Australia faces, such as the increasing rates of certain cancers in our population, to stresses on our crop plants faced with environmental changes. Discovery of novel microRNA components will provide new strategies for confronting a diverse array of challenges Australia faces, such as the increasing rates of certain cancers in our population, to stresses on our crop plants faced with environmental changes. The biological mechanisms underlying these disparate problems are unified by microRNA involvement in many instances. By finding microRNA controlling factors common to all higher organisms, we expect our community will benefit from the increased knowledge base that will help our researchers adopt new strategies in fighting diseases and improving our agricultural industry.Read moreRead less
Control of transcription by the cardiac homeodomain protein Nkx2-5. The transcriptional regulatory protein Nkx2-5, a member of the homeodomain superfamily, is essential for heart development and mutations in the human gene cause congenital heart disease. The transcriptional regulatory protein Nkx2-5, a member of the homeodomain superfamily, is essential for heart development and mutations in the human gene cause congenital heart disease. We seek to define the molecular mechanisms that regulate the transcriptional activity of Nkx2-5. We have previously identified a transcriptional activation domain in the C-terminal region that is bipartite in nature and conserved among Nkx2-5 proteins from diverse species. We will characterise the consequences of mutations in this domain in mouse models and search for interacting proteins. Results will advance our understanding of gene regulation in the context of heart disease.Read moreRead less

The complexity was first appreciated as antigenic diversity, but we now have hundreds of chemical structures and perhaps a hundred sequences of their gene clusters, but the number in nature must be many thousands. Our knowledge of gene function is growing but is not keeping up with the discovery of new sequences and structures. The aim is to determine structure and function of key O antigen processing genes and the functions of a range of glycosyl transferases, and to use the information to generate novel gene clusters to synthesise novel polysaccharidesRead moreRead less
Elucidation of bacterial glycosylytransferase specificity. The benefits are involvement in the growth area of polysaccharide research, with potential for major industrial spin off. The benefits are involvement in the growth area of polysaccharide research, with potential for major industrial spin off. Polysaccharides are critical in all organisms as signalling, structural and storage compounds. Bacteria make a wide variety with extensive use of unusual sugars, some with uses from oil emulsifiers to food thickeners. The project is on the enzymes that assemble bacterial polysaccharides. We are world leaders in genetics of the gene clusters especially synthesis of the unusual sugars. We now aim to fill a major gap by determining which enzymes make which bonds, leading to options for new gene combinations and novel structures. We have a lead in research in this area and Australia gains if we maintain that lead.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop consumer-centred approaches to reducing the harmful effects of confusion in financial decisions by studying superannuation investment and home loan decisions where confused choices are individually and collectively costly. The project intends to develop comprehensive models to capture the full complexity of financial products and the diverse preferences and capability of consumers, then to use advanced statistical methods to estimate the benefits of clearer decision-making. The outcomes of this project includes new models of complex financial decisions, and a better understanding of where confusion arises and the effects it may have. Decreased confusion will raise financial well-being and help communities become more resilient to financial shocks.Read moreRead less
Do wealth creating mergers and acquisitions really hurt acquirer shareholders? The purpose of this project is to investigate the benefit to the community of acquisitions, especially when the stock price of the acquirer falls on the announcement. This project is likely to show that acquiring shareholders still gain substantially in these circumstances. The outcome will be fewer failed bids with better regulatory outcomes.
