Improving Diagnosis, Treatment And Prevention Of Mitochondrial Disease

Summary
The goal of this work is to use state-of-the-art research methods to improve clinical practice and the health outcomes for patients with mitochondrial disease and other neurological disorders. Professor Sue will undertake an integrated program involving clinical studies, bioinformatics, tissue culture and in vitro cell modelling to discover better ways to treat mitochondrial disease and other neurological diseases due to impaired mitochondrial function.
Stroke is a devastating disease affecting 50,000 Australians and over 5 million people globally every year. The overall aims are to develop better knowledge, better tools and more effective strategies to treat and prevent stroke. Projects include discovery of new genetic stroke risk factors, better management of recognised risk factors, trials of treatment strategies for acute stroke, and the investigation of strategies for more effective implementation of treatments.
Improving Outcomes In Osteoporosis And Bone Health

Summary
Osteoporotic fractures are a common and increasing problem as the population ages. They are associated with increased risk of re-fracture and early death yet most patients remain untreated. This proposal will identify which fracture patients are at highest risk of re-fracture and premature death (b) identify whether osteoporosis treatment decreases this risk and (c) increase osteoporosis awareness and treatment uptake by general practitioners with an integrated fracture risk prediction tool.
This fellowship will allow the applicant to continue his studies into understanding and intervening in osteoarthritis. He will use a combination of observational studies and clinical trials to achieve this purpose.
This fellowship will allow the applicant to continue to study the major musculoskeletal diseases in Australia (osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis) using a combination of observational and interventional studies.
Immunisation is second only to clean water and sanitation as a life-saving activity. Vaccine safety is considered to be very important by the general public, the media and the health professions. With so many diseases controlled and now rare, the safety of vaccines assumes greater importance. Research is needed on new and safer vaccines, using e.g. a needle-free approach, against old foes, like influenza, and new enemies (like MERS) with vaccine safety more important than ever.
Tackling Key Epidemiological And Basic Scientific Research Issues In Prion Diseases.

Proposed Practitioner Fellowship research will simultaneously include epidemiological and basic scientific projects, emphasising human prion disease. Epidemiological research will involve large-scale studies to clarify genetic factors that influence susceptibility to developing prion disease, as well as clarify whether Alzheimer disease is transmissible, while basic scientific research will include determining the characteristics of the misfolded prion proteins causing neuronal disease.

Diabetes can cause eye, kidney, heart and nerve damage. The applicant will lead human studies of treatments to prevent complications, improve blood glucose and co-ordinate care. Early outcome prediction would enable better treatment of high-risk people, monitoring of therapy, and development of new treatments. Dr Jenkins also has a network with data and samples from over 35,000 people with diabetes, preliminary data, and a team to measure markers and test new treatments in the lab.

Hepatitis C is a major public health issue in Australia, and globally, with escalating liver disease burden. Highly effective interferon-free HCV regimens will be available from 2016 and have the potential to provide one of the greatest advances in clinical medicine in recent decades. Development of implementation strategies for new HCV therapies, particularly for highly marginalised populations including people who inject drugs and prisoners, is crucial to provide broad public health impact.

I am a paediatrician researcher dedicated to improving health and quality of life for ill and disadvantaged children. The focus of my Fellowship will be research in three areas: rare childhood diseases, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and vaccine-preventable disease, with attention to diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Alignment of my research and clinical work and my experience in evidence-based medicine will facilitate adoption of my research into clinical care and health policy.
