    Genetic Determinants Of Bone Mass

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $107,366.00
    Summary
I am a clinician-scientist and endocrinologist most interested in clinical problems associated with bone, in particular the highly heritable disease of osteoporosis. I hope by studying genetic determinants of bone mass to determine the key genes involved, with the long term aim of informing the development of novel therapies for this common, painful and disabling disease.

Development Of Statistical Methodologies And Application To Clinical Cancer Studies

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $428,065.00
    Summary
Integrating different layers of information coming from the recent ‘-omics’ technologies can help improving the treatment and the prevention of complex diseases. In particular, the identification of molecular markers of different types can be used for better diagnostics and prognosis in cancer and immune diseases. This project will develop innovative statistical solutions to handle and make sense of the vast amount of biological data that are routinely generated in the laboratories.

Impact Of Pneumococcal Vaccination And Environmental Factors On Pneumococcal Carriage And Disease.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $455,872.00
    Summary
Pneumonia is the leading killer of children <5y of age worldwide, and the pneumococcal bacterium is a common cause. Pneumococci are carried in the noses of healthy children. In this project we will determine 1) whether carriage can be used to monitor the impact of vaccination in resource-poor settings, 2) the effect of new vaccines on ear disease and transmission using infant mouse models and 3) if exposure to smoke effects the ability of pneumococci to cause disease and altered gene expressi .... Asthma Genetics: Dissecting The Missing Heritability And Biology

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $451,716.00
    Summary
The goal of this application is to apply state-of-the-art technologies to (1) identify genes that increase the risk of developing asthma and (2) help translate this information into knowledge that can be used to improve disease management. I will achieve this by analysing data generated by the Australian Asthma Genetics Consortium and international collaborators.

Nfi Genes Regulate The Switch Between Neurogenesis And Gliogenesis During Cortical Development

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $387,489.00
    Summary
Cells within the brain fall into two categories; neurons or glia. Importantly, both derive from a common progenitor population, the radial glia, during development. Early in development radial glia produce neurons, while later they generate glia. The genes which control the switch from neuron production to glia production remain poorly defined. I propose to investigate how this switch is controlled in radial glia, focussing on a family of proteins known to regulate gene transcription.
