This project investigates the post-Cold War proliferation of economic sanctions. Advocates of sanctions see them as peaceful alternatives to armed conflict that uphold international norms without resort to force. Yet sanctions have significant and unpredictable effects and their use remains deeply contested. This project draws on detailed archival research to understand how liberal polities have come to view economic sanctions as non-violent tools of diplomacy and how this view has been contested by those subjected to them. By analysing the moral, political and economic theories that inform the imposition of sanctions, the research will throw new light on a crucial dimension of international politics. Read moreRead less

This project will contribute to building Australia's capacity in the area of phenomenology and connecting Australian researchers into the international network of phenomenology research. More generally the project will contribute to the broader community debate that is currently emerging around issues of the role and limits of knowledge, especially scientific knowledge, but also knowledge as it arises and is applied in organisational and social contexts, and the importance of responsibility and judgment even in areas of technical problem-solving and decision-making. In this latter respect, the project is likely to have an impact in more directly applied areas such as policy formation and decision-making across many different areas.Read moreRead less

The project will investigate the social construction of race and identity. Its aim is to demonstrate how race operates as an external and prescriptive marker, which is internalised and performed; and how race intersects with other factors operating on the construction of identity. This notion challenges many standard accounts, and provides a new and innovative framework for analysing race and identity. The project draws on work and theories rarely used in analysing racial identity in Australia, and applies them in new and innovative ways. The expected outcomes include resolution of problems of difference in race and identity, within race theory.Read moreRead less

The principle of respect for autonomy is a guiding ethical principle in a range of areas, including in medical and legal contexts, for example in requirements regarding informed consent, and in ethical guidelines governing protocols for research involving human subjects. A better understanding of autonomy and its relationship to the social context has the potential to produce indirect socio-economic benefits by informing theory and practice in these and other areas. Australia as a young and striving society depends heavily on innovation and the integration of creative forces. Yet creativity can only be understood through a close analysis of its conditions. This philosophical project can contribute directly by investigating paradigm cases of successful groupings of individuals around specific clusters of related problems.
