Summary
A History of Intimate Relationships in Scotland: Emotion and Family among the Lower Orders, 1661-1830. This project will provide a comprehensive and novel analysis of intimate relationships amongst the Scottish lower orders between 1661 and 1830, filling a gap in the European/Anglophone research on the emotional lives of the poor. It will use an innovative methodology to access emotions amongst a group who did not leave traditional 'feeling' sources, such as letters and diaries, to create a pict ....A History of Intimate Relationships in Scotland: Emotion and Family among the Lower Orders, 1661-1830. This project will provide a comprehensive and novel analysis of intimate relationships amongst the Scottish lower orders between 1661 and 1830, filling a gap in the European/Anglophone research on the emotional lives of the poor. It will use an innovative methodology to access emotions amongst a group who did not leave traditional 'feeling' sources, such as letters and diaries, to create a picture of their emotional and familial world. Its novel methodology will supply a model for doing similar work in other contexts, while its insights into how this group formed families, and used emotions in that process, will provide historical data that can inform social policy and strengthen Australia's social and economic fabric.Read moreRead less
LGBTQ Migrations: Life Story Narratives in the South Australian GLAM Sector. This project investigates the role gender and sexual diversity play in migration and mobility to South Australia 1950-1999 and how stories of migration can be collected and preserved. An international history of Australian democracy: the impact of Australian innovation overseas and of international human rights in Australia. This project will chart the international career of Australian democracy and the impact of innovations such as manhood suffrage, the Australian ballot, women's rights and industrial arbitration overseas. It will also investigate the impact of new international definitions of human rights on re-shaping Australian democracy after World War Two.
Remaking the British world after 1815. This project aims to examine the pivotal role of commissions of inquiry in reforming law throughout the British Empire from 1815–1840. Using traditional methods and digital tools, this project will investigate the design, instantiation and impact of inquiry on colonial law, the imperial constitution and the mechanisms of imperial governance across the empire. Empire of Emergency: Martial Law and the British Empire, 1700-1865. Emergency powers are of enormous importance in the twenty-first century. Empire of Emergency aims to explain a core aspect of their development by exploring the history of martial law in the British Empire. It aims to show how martial law proliferated in British colonies after 1760, becoming a ubiquitous tool, not only for quelling colonial rebellion, but for managing disorder in difficult hinterlands in colonies as disparate as ....Empire of Emergency: Martial Law and the British Empire, 1700-1865. This project explains how ’anti-slavery’ discourse shaped humanitarian campaigns in Australia, including Aboriginal rights, indenture, forced labour, trafficking and sexual slavery, by investigating the transmission of ideas and campaigns through international humanitarian networks in Britain, Europe and Australia. German-speakers in the Australian indigenous encounter: ethnographers, collectors, missionaries. This project will generate a website and accompanying scholarly book to provide easy access to otherwise intractable sources show-casing the vast contribution of German speakers to the mission and ethnographic effort in the Australian colonies. These will be useful resources for history teaching and a contribution to intercultural understanding.
Resilient humanitarianism: the League of Red Cross Societies, 1919-1991. A promise kept and a country lost: a critical and transnational investigation of the Greek campaign, 1941. As the first transnational, critical and scholarly study of the Greek campaign of World War II, this project will force a reinterpretation of the military events of early 1941. An analysis of Australia's role in Greece will make important additions not only to Australian military history but to wider social history and contemporary military affairs.
Worldly encounters: Australian internationalists and the future of world civilization in the twentieth century Pan-Pacific. This project investigates Australian contributions to debate about world citizenship through the role of citizen internationalists in the Pacific and asks what their encounters with a community of peers in the twentieth century reveals about the role of Australia in the history of internationalism in our region and beyond.
