Elucidating the increasing demand for genital cosmetic surgery among girls and women in Australia. This project will identify the psychosocial context of and public communication about the dramatic rise in female genital cosmetic surgery in Australia. Results will contribute to programs for sexuality and body image education, public health campaigns about normal genital diversity, and professional development for doctors and beauty therapists.
An examination of the development, experience and construction of premenstrual symptoms: A comparative study of relationship types and contexts. Of 9,689 Australian women recently surveyed nationally, 33% reported moderate or severe premenstrual symptoms (PMS). To date, there has been no detailed examination of this debilitation, or the factors associated with it. It draws critical attention to a field of contest and re-negotiation of national identity and belonging, thus far not identified, that has far-reaching effects for the national fabric. Partner choice is key to understanding individuals' sexual behaviour and the relationships they develop in response. Yet gay and bisexual men's (GBM) sexual partner choices have not been researched. In Australia, most research on boys and boyhood is focused on risk-reduction, representing boys as problems at school, on the streets, or in relationships, with an ambivalent (if not oppositional) relation to feminism. At the same time, anti-feminist public discourse highlighting the experiences of boys and young men is used to justify violence towards women as well as call for the reversal of social changes that have expanded opportunities available to g ....Australian Boys: Beyond the Boy Problem. Women and the rise of contact sport. This project aims to investigate the growing visibility of women in contact sports in Australia and the multiple forces that influence their participation. Expected outcomes of this project include the enhanced capacity of contact sports to include and support women's participation; it does this by engaging with policies and practices that work towards gender equality and long-term sustainability.
Men on the home front: spatialities of domesticity and masculinity. This project promotes 'good health and well being for all Australians'. Case studies 1 and 2 investigate the factors underpinning self-reliance and family support in a time of changing household structures. They seek to understand how the domestic lives of men both living alone, and in families, can better contribute to social well-being and wider community interaction and cohesion. Sexual Technologies and Reproductive Powers. The project is to investigate the impact of the new reproductive technologies on the concepts of the sexual relation. The derivation of concepts of sexual equality, and their relation and dependence on technology will be examined. Using the theoretical perspectives of European philosophy, in conjunction with contemporary feminist philosophy, the direction of change in concepts will be investigated.
