This project aims to use a consensus method involving expert carers, consumers and professionals to develop easily accessible information specifically to assist family members in understanding and coping with a loved one's bipolar disorder. It will include things they can do to help reduce bipolar relapse and enhance their own quality of life. This information will be expanded to develop a brief supportive intervention aimed at bolstering the coping skills and wellbeing of family members.

Summary
Nausea and vomiting are common problems in-patients with advanced cancer and they are under-treated. The investigators will develop evidence-based tools to assist non-specialist clinicians in the assessment and treatment of nausea in advanced cancer. They will also develop an educational intervention to train health professionals to use these tools and pilot a randomised trial designed to evaluate the package in NSW and WA.

Summary
Pleural effusions (PE) are collections of fluid around the lung. They are common in patients in intensive care (ICU) and in patients with metastatic cancer. Some pleural effusions resolve with medications, others require drainage procedures which have risks including lung damage, bleeding or infection which can be dangerous, especially in critically ill (ICU) patients. This proposal aims to optimise treatment decisions for PE in the ICU and cancer settings.

Clinical Quality Registries collect health data about the quality of clinical care and assist the implementation and monitoring of clinical guidelines into practice. Registries can identify variations in clinical care across geographical areas, facilitate further research into a condition, and help refine and develop new guidelines over time. This proposal will test procedures and pilot a clinical quality registry for dementia, using data from a well-characterised cohort.

Bioethics has not delivered the local ethical resources needed for public health research in community settings. This program will develop and test a new framework and practical tools for research governance and responses to ethical challenges in community-based public health research. It will deliver a new public health ethics system, policy and practice resources to suit the multi-disciplinarity of the modern public health research field.
An abnormal blood pressure (BP) response to a clinical exercise stress test is a signal for increased cardiovascular disease risk. However, current clinical guidelines do not provide evidence based information surrounding values that may constitute this increased risk. The EXERcise stress Test collaboratION (EXERTION) aims to fill this knowledge gap via establishment of a large, national database of exercise stress test results, linked to acute and chronic cardiovascular disease outcomes.
