Transition home following acquired brain injury (ABI) is a critical phase in which individuals and families are vulnerable. Unsuccessful transitions are characterised by events such as financial crisis, family breakdown, loss of work, social isolation, and institutionalisation. ABI does not discriminate, but there is a higher rate in Indigenous, rural and remote communities and amongst younger people. The societal impact of ABI includes loss of income and livelihood, health and welfare dependence, and long-term accommodation support. Research into the determinants of successful transition will alleviate the personal, social and economic burden of ABI and inform policy and program priorities for appropriate Australian Government bodies.Read moreRead less

The National Research Priorities include 'ageing well, ageing productively'. Within this priority, it is necessary to be inclusive of those who have ongoing disabilities and/or chronic disease. This project aims to facilitate healthy lifestyles and community involvement in a group who have significant barriers to achieving their potential. The high incidence of depression and poor quality of life in stroke survivors and their carers emphasises the need to enhance wellness in these people. The study will develop a model for promoting recovery and community reintegration in stroke survivors, with the goal of enabling stroke survivors and their carers to actively participate in the community and pursue personal goals.Read moreRead less

This project develops a model of driver rehabilitation and training, based on speed of information processing variables, for people with acquired brain injuries (ABI). Current evaluations of fitness to drive lack sufficient theoretical and empirical foundations. Consequent problems include inappropriate decisions about fitness to drive, compromised driver safety, and inadequate driver training. Accurate assessment of ABI processing deficits will generate driver-training programs tailored to individual needs. The project also addresses rehabilitation and training outcomes, particularly as they relate to reduced social services needs and enhanced quality of life. It provides a paradigm for evaluating rehabilitation outcomes in wider contexts.
