This project has the potential to benefit bionic ear and hearing aid users through the development of signal processing methods that mimic the amazing abilities of the brain. Speech perception performance by bionic ear users has reached a plateau and these new strategies could produce the breakthrough needed to provide the next increase in performance. The benefit for greater improved hearing has enormous benefit and potential for improving the quality of life of the hearing impaired, especially those with severe and profound hearing loss. In addition, the algorithms may provide more robust automatic speech recognition, making this technology more useful in everyday situations; the markets that this would open up are enormous.Read moreRead less

Complex systems are an important international research focus in many disciplines, and their engineering applications are plentiful. The new mathematical approach developed by this project will enable different disciplines for the first time to communicate using a common formal framework. This will open the path to a generalized understanding of self-organized systems in dynamic environments. Creating the tools for a unified interdisciplinary approach will allow Australia to gain a stronger position in biomimetic engineering and to take a lead in international research on collective behavior.

The Australian Centre for Complex Systems brings together leading researchers from several disciplines and institutions to conduct research on questions fundamental to understanding and managing complex systems. Its core research program, based on the theme of computation in and by networks of agents, has two interwoven strands. The science strand addresses questions about emergent properties, natural computation, and nonlinear dynamics. The engineering strand addresses issues about methodology, modelling toolkits, and management and control. Practical applications are advanced via collaborative projects that address key issues in biology, environment, and socio-economics.Read moreRead less
Elucidating the mechanisms by which Scribble, Discs Large and Lethal Giant Larvae regulate epithelial polarity. Discs Large (Dlg) and Scribble are proteins that regulate cell shape by concentrating at particular regions within the cell and recruiting other proteins to that region. It is thought that the two proteins interact with each other, and with other proteins involved in protein trafficking and cell architecture, but it is not known how these events coordinate to produce a net outcome on ....Elucidating the mechanisms by which Scribble, Discs Large and Lethal Giant Larvae regulate epithelial polarity. Discs Large (Dlg) and Scribble are proteins that regulate cell shape by concentrating at particular regions within the cell and recruiting other proteins to that region. It is thought that the two proteins interact with each other, and with other proteins involved in protein trafficking and cell architecture, but it is not known how these events coordinate to produce a net outcome on cell shape. To answer these questions, the dynamic events involved in localization of Dlg, Scribble, and associated proteins will be determined, in mammalian cells and in whole organs of the vinegar fly.Read moreRead less
Mobility of log-dependent invertebrates in fragmented forest. Clearing of Australian native forests continues apace. This leads to declines in total forest area and creates isolated remnants with depleted woody debris. Critical forest processes driven by invertebrates occur in this debris. This leads to declines in total forest area and creates isolated remnants with depleted woody debris. Critical forest processes driven by invertebrates occur in this debris. Despite its major economic and conservation significance, there is little information on the impacts of habitat loss and alteration on organisms in decomposing logs. We will utilize recent advances in population genetics to compare impacts on a suite of log-dependent invertebrates in an islands-of-bush-in-a-sea-of-pines model. This will facilitate improvements in conservation and sustainable management outcomes in forests.Read moreRead less

A cell's ability to respond to its extracellular environment involves a complex and highly organised series of events referred to as cellular signalling. These signalling processes regulate fundamental cellular processes that underlie the growth and development of all living organisms. This proposal focuses on a group of enzymes known as the protein tyrosine phosphatases and their ability to regulate tyrosine phosphorylation-dependent signalling. We have identified a novel human protein tyrosine phosphatase and we aim to characterise its regulation and biological function.Read moreRead less
