The PRAXIS project aims to deliver a new era in ground-based infrared observations. The infrared night sky is a hundred times brighter than the optical night sky, which has severely limited the sensitivity at these wavelengths. But 99 per cent of the infrared sky arises from hundreds of extremely bright, narrow emission lines due to hydroxyl in the Earth's atmosphere. PRAXIS, at the Anglo-Australian Telescope, is designed to cancel these lines using new multicore fibre Bragg gratings developed in Australia. The new fibres would render the night sky very dark and allow Australian astronomers to obtain unique observations. Protein biosensors for detecting smoke exposure of grapes. Bush fires and controlled burns that take place in the vicinity of vineyards can lead to grape contamination with tasteless phenolic glucosides. Their hydrolysis during wine making leads to “smoke taint” – an unpleasant medicinal taste that can render wine undrinkable. These biosensors will be used to devise a simple portable colorimetric test that can be performed in the vineyard or the winery. This project will identify the source of foodborne illnesses due to Salmonella and Campylobacter in order to inform food regulatory policy. The ultimate aim is to reduce the amount of foodborne disease in Australia.
Molecular characterisation of the Prf bacterial recognition complex of tomato. This project will investigate the composition and function of a large protein complex in tomatoes that controls their ability to resist attack by bacteria. The results will provide understanding to how all plants resist all diseases, and may help to improve environmentally-benign disease resistance in crop species.
