However this project aims to add value to the crop by designing a scalable food-grade and commercialisable technology to purify the protein gamma-conglutin from lupin seed waste as a nutraceutical for human blood glucose control. The process optimisation and mechanism of action for gamma-conglutin will be informed by proteomic analysis and cellular studies. From the project farmers may benefit through adding a premium to their crop value, a new gamma-conglutin purification technology will be available for processors to commercialise and consumers will have a natural product to help their blood glucose control.Read moreRead less

Developing advanced, high performance new materials requires an understanding of surfaces and interfaces. Making a small area, low yield material or device is a regular occurrence within the Australian research community. The ability to create reproducible, high yield materials requires greater understanding of the stresses, uniformities and deformations in a material over large areas. The proposed instrument can measure topography over many centimeters-squared with sub-micron spatial resolution, currently beyond the capabilities of researchers in Australia. By providing a quantitative method to measure surface textures, the instrument will also support Australian industries looking for improved process control.Read moreRead less
Food allergies have emerged as a major public health concern affecting 1 in 10 Australian infants. Hospitals waiting times are in excess of 12-months for specialist services. Recent changes in the environment are driving up rates of food allergy but the mechanisms are unclear. Epigenetics is the science of how the environment influences gene behaviour. This fellowship will address the important and urgent question of how modern environments are changing our genes, leading to food allergy.
Initiation of spontaneous fires. This project aims to determine the origin of the initiation reactions that set off the self-heating of wood chips, coal, milk powder and other economically-important materials, leading to spontaneous fires. This project will provide fundamental understanding of the reactions between electronically excited species of oxygen and carbonaceous fuels, with applications to improved safety in wood, mineral and food industries. The outcomes include identification of the ....Initiation of spontaneous fires. This project will provide fundamental understanding of the reactions between electronically excited species of oxygen and carbonaceous fuels, with applications to improved safety in wood, mineral and food industries. The outcomes include identification of the initiation mechanisms and development of mechanistic models that include the initiation step of the self-heating process, and development of new technologies for mitigation of spontaneous fires, based on quenching of the initiation reactions.Read moreRead less

Compound specific isotopes of polar organic molecules in complex mixtures. This project aims to develop a liquid chromatography – isotope ratio mass spectrometry facility for the measurement of stable carbon isotope ratios of individual organic compounds in complex mixtures, most significantly sugars and amino acids. This will be the first such facility in Western Australia, strategically ranked to greatly expand existing world-class capabilities in stable isotope analysis. This will be the first such facility in Western Australia, strategically ranked to greatly expand existing world-class capabilities in stable isotope analysis. An important goal of this project is the analysis of sugars in high-value foodstuffs such as honey, to develop a robust method of provenancing and authentication for important export markets. Other outcomes include elucidation of modern and ancient biological and ecological systems through the isotope analysis of natural products from microbes.Read moreRead less

This project answers fundamental questions about mammalian reproductive biology but, because we work with the sheep model, our findings can be applied to two of Australia's biggest export industries, wool and sheepmeat. Understanding the reproductive responses of our production animals to exteroceptive factors such as socio-sexual signals, photoperiod and nutrition is an important first step towards refining the management of breeding programs. It has been argued that this approach will also minimise, and perhaps even remove the need for, exogenous hormones and drugs for controlling the reproductive process.Read moreRead less
