Control systems theory provides principles and methods for design of complex engineering systems that automatically maintain desired performance despite changes in their environment (e.g. autopilot in an aircraft). This field is facing many new exciting challenges at the dawn of new millenium, such as design of complex engineering systems in possibly networked, asynchronous and distributed environments. The network will play a major role in addressing these challenges by providing a national research focus, facilitating collaboration and the sharing of people and ideas. By delivering a National Graduate School, the network will enhance learning conditions for graduate students. Moreover, it will provide an important catalyst between Australian universities and industry. This initiative will be essential in assessing the present state of control research in Australia and drafting a detailed plan for the network's leading research role in the future. Nonlinear Dynamics of Pulse Coupled Oscillators. A mathematical model of the heart pacemaker system will be created, based on simple interacting units. These units have been shown to be good models of physiological information e.g. the discrimination of different influences on heart rate. We will firstly look at the interaction of the units in simple combinations and then tune the model to mimic the behaviour of the cardiac pacemaker.

Potential benefits may arise from elucidating the mechanisms underlying arrhythmias which contribute to ?sudden cardiac death? in young men, and suggesting strategies for artificial pacemakers to effectively arrest abnormal rhythms before they convert to potentially fatal fibrillation.Read moreRead less

Glasses and ceramics can possess a combination of properties not available in other materials and thus they are of technological importance with rapidly developing applications. However a fundamental theoretical basis for describing these systems has been missing. The reason for this is that glasses are not in thermodynamic equilibrium, so the standard tools of equilibrium statistical mechanics cannot be rigorously applied . This project will make an important contribution towards building a strong local knowledge base by addressing the problem of understanding the glassy state. The knowledge base can then serve as a springboard for possible high tech applications in materials science and engineering.Read moreRead less
