Efficient Algorithms for Multiple Object Filtering using Stochastic Geometry. The outcomes of this project will enhance our ability to harness advances in sensing and computing technologies and develop automated systems which facilitate rapid and reliable detection and monitoring of potential threats in our air, sea, and land space. Such systems assist our defence personnel in the event of a threat to implement measured and effective responses, and ultimately enhance Australia's operational advantage, in line with the national research priority of 'Safeguarding Australia' and its associated priority goals. The developed technologies also have significant commercial potential which benefit Australian industries in areas such as robotics, automotive safety and biomedical engineering.

The aim of this project is to develop efficient algorithms for tracking and sensor management in a multi-sensor multi-target environment. Finite random set theory provides a natural way of representing a random number of (random) object states, an issue that has been largely ignored in the tracking literature until recently. Although a satisfactory foundation for multiple object filtering has been provided by random set theory, in this early stage no algorithm capable of tracking many targets has emerged from this framework. We are confident that efficient algorithms can be developed by exploiting the insights and mathematical tools of stochastic geometry

Better Planning for and Managing Asymmetric Threats to Australia's Security: Applying the Field Anomaly Relaxation (FAR) Systems Thinking Approach. Despite an enviable national security condition, Australia is at risk in an information-abundant world that increasingly spawns asymmetric threats such as information terrorism. What is needed are enhanced strategic and operational structures to improve the nation's security and ensure sound futures planning. This research focuses on applying the Field Anomaly Relaxation (FAR) systems thinking approach to asymmetric information warfare threats to Australia. This is a new approach previously developed by ECU researchers investigating risk and innovation in the armed forces. It will now be extended to improve professional practice and the knowledge and skill base of Australia's information defence practitioners.

The proposed facility will enable researchers to modify the internal properties of glass blocks and write 'optical wires' (or waveguides). By combining waveguides with other laser written functional components researchers will develop devices capable of processing optical information. Outcomes will include demonstrations of compact lasers and slow light generation.

Investigation of vertical magneto-transport in infrared detector structures based on InAs/GaSb type-II superlattices. Infrared sensors and systems are finding increasing use in Australia's core industries: particularly defence, mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, homeland security, and medical diagnostics. Due to the reduced cooling requirements, the Infrared detector structures to be investigated in this project have the potential to deliver high performance infrared technology at a significantly lower cost and, hence, widening its applications. The new science proposed in this project, and new technological knowledge expected from its application, will allow Australian researchers to participate and significantly contribute to the international effort in this field and to exploit any developed intellectual property.

Analysis of Polynomial Phase Signals with Missing Observations. Many non-stationary signals in radar, physics and communications can be modelled as polynomial phase signals. These signals are often incomplete due to missing observations from intermittent sensor failures, outliers, receiver errors, periodic interference and inaccessibility of data. The aim of this project is to develop robust and computationally efficient methods for recovering such signals from small data sets when there is a large proportion of missing observations. This will contribute to a conceptual advancement in the field of signal processing and will provide new methods for use in applications such as radar, astrophysics, seismology, vibration analysis and communications.
