    Health Coaching Intervention To Prevent Excessive Gestational Weight Gain

    Summary
    Excessive weight gain in pregnancy places women at a greater risk for the development of overweight and obesity. This study responds to the urgent need to design effective interventions to prevent excessive weight gain in pregnancy. A health coaching intervention has been designed to address this need, and its effectiveness will be evaluated in a randomised controlled trial with first time pregnant women.

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has been demonstrated to be a novel, sensitive, specific nucleic acid amplification technique. My project aims to optimise LAMP into a high-throughput field applicable molecular diagnostic tool capable of diagnosing malaria in elimination settings

What Were We Thinking (WWWT) is a promising new program for mothers, fathers and newborns. This trial will test whether WWWT improves women’s mental health in the first six months of motherhood

    The Molecular Epidemiology Of Malaria Transmission In The Solomon Islands

    The recent dramatic reduction in malaria burden has prompted a shift from control to elimination and aims to interrupt malaria transmission itself. Achieving this requires the development of set tools that directly target transmission. Little is known about the epidemiology of malaria transmission in the SW Pacific. The goal of this PhD project is to determine the dynamics of malaria transmission in Solomon Islands using a combination of large epidemiological studies and novel molecular assays.

    Indwelling Pleural Catheter For Management Of Cancer-related Pleural Effusions

    Most cancers can be complicated by fluid accumulation (effusion) in the (pleural) cavity between the lung and chest wall, causing significant breathlessness. Indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) is a new method that allows patients to drain the effusion outside the hospital and avoid further invasive interventions. This study aims to provide important information that will help guide use of IPC and manage its complications, especially infection, improve patient outcomes and save healthcare costs.

    Plasmodium knowlesi is a form of monkey malaria recently found to also cause increasing numbers of natural infections in humans in South-East Asia. This research will describe the burden of P. knowlesi malaria in an area of Malaysian Borneo. The risk factors for acquiring P. knowlesi malaria will be assessed. Finally the optimal treatment for non-severe cases of P. knowlesi and P. vivax malaria will also be evaluated by comparing the 2 currently recommended anti-malarial medications in Malaysia.

    While the focus in the treatment of coronary artery disease has primarily been on the large vessels in the heart, vessels of small calibre may also play a significant role in patients with angina, heart attack, and muscle injury related to a stenting procedure.This project aims elucidate the possible mechanisms which cause dysfunction in these small vessels. I also hope to find a treatment strategy which may benefit patients with small vessel problems and thus improve their overall outcome.
