This project aims to improve the dewatering behaviour of waste tailings from mineral processing activites. Dewatering and disposal of tailings containing fine particles are serious issues which confront the mineral industry. Effective dewatering of tailings is determined by particle-solution interfacial chemistry and particle interactions. These properties will be manipulated by matching the molecular architecture and functionality of flocculants to mineral particle surface chemistry. Optimization of tails interfacial chemistry and particle interactions through conventional and non-conventional flocculants will be investigated and electoosmosis will be applied to achieve maximum dewatering behaviour. The scientific and environmental outcomes will be beneficial to all stakeholders.Read moreRead less

This research aims to investigate the impacts of Australia’s Seasonal Workers Programme and South Korea’s Employment Permit System on the well-being of migrant workers and their families in Timor-Leste (East Timor). The contribution of this research to scholarship would be the creation of a sound method to measure the impact of temporary labour migration on well-being across various aspects of life that can be used by researchers in Timor-Leste and elsewhere to evaluate the development impacts of such migration schemes. The data will inform evidence-based policies to improve temporary labour migration schemes, meet urgent development priorities in Timor-Leste, and maximise the benefits of Australian aid funded labour migration schemes.Read moreRead less

Cosmopolitan development: the impacts of international volunteering. This project will provide new ways of thinking about the impact of international development volunteering. It examines how volunteering contributes to more equal partnerships between Australia and its neighbouring countries and how it transforms the ways volunteers and host organisations perceive and respond to global challenges.

The effects of international commodity price shocks on state fragility. This project examines the effects that commodity price shocks have on state fragility in developing countries. Outcomes that will be analysed include, but are not limited to, the transition from autocracy to democracy, the stability of democracy, the risk of civil conflict, food riots, and the survival probability of dictators.
DNA and the missing: ancient DNA and advanced forensic identification. Identifying the remains of missing persons, disaster victims and war dead is of major social and cultural importance and has significant implications for national and international justice systems. This project will apply expertise in analysis of ancient DNA to build capacity and expertise within Australia to identify highly degraded human remains.
The Morality of Assistance. Other people's needs and interests give us reasons to help them - reasons that ground moral requirements. But how extensive are those requirements? How should our actions to assist other people be motivated? And what obligations does the receipt of assistance create? But how extensive are those requirements? How should our actions to assist other people be motivated? And what obligations does the receipt of assistance create? These questions are of foundational importance to moral philosophy, and underlie a range of practical issues of public policy, professional practice and moral education. In this project, the standard treatment of these questions is rejected. It shows how recent innovative work in theoretical ethics can be used to answer some of the most important questions of applied ethics.Read moreRead less
Policing the Neighbourhood: Australian Police Peace-keeping, Capacity-building, and Development in Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Australia's involvement in policing offshore is growing rapidly. Timor-Leste and the Solomon Islands, and shortly, Papua New Guinea, feature in these developments. Australia's involvement in policing offshore is growing rapidly. Timor-Leste and the Solomon Islands, and shortly, Papua New Guinea, feature in these developments. The Australian Federal Police is now a key player in regional security and development. This study takes stock of this trend. Through three case studies, the project examines the grounds for providing assistance, the different cultural and political contexts in which assistance is taking place, the forms of that assistance, and the achievements and shortcomings of previous and current police assistance missions. It will also provide an analytical framework for future engagements of this nature.Read moreRead less
Control Of Aggregate Structure, Settling And Dewatering In Mineral Tailings Processing. Modification of aggregate structures in mineral processing will lead to improved dewatering in tailings operations. In mine site rehabilitation and tailings utilisation, technology developed in this project may save not only millions of dollars in more efficient processing and tailing deposition but also help to better reuse our limited national water resources.
