The role of floc structure in the formation of sediments and filter cakes. The effect of this structure on processes for separating solids and liquids is significant: each year, millions of dollars stand to be saved though more efficient filtration, and more efficient thickening of mineral slurries. Improved understanding allows intelligent design of flocculation systems to optimise the performance of downstream solid - liquid separation processes, maximising economic and environmental returns.Read moreRead less

The analytical methods and experimental data to be developed will enable an Australian team to become world leaders in determining pressures and temperatures of mineral growth that correspond to a range of depths and temperature gradients in the Earth tha t is wider than accessible previously. Obtaining this information from small zones within single grains will allow determination of rates of change, and give us a detailed picture of how the host rock has evolved, even from very small samples. One application would be checking the origin of relatively common minerals for whether they could be associated with diamonds.Read moreRead less

This is a "frontier technologies" (nanotechnology) project and promises to open up new opportunities for exciting development in molecular engineering. Catalytic gas-solid reactions are among the most important reactions in chemical industry and energy industry. The novel fluidised bed nanoparticle catalytic reactor is expected to have many important advantages over the conventional porous supported catalyst system. These reactors promise to minimise the waste product generation from chemical and energy industries and so offer great benefit for the environment. Young researchers involved in the project will be equipped with knowledge at the forefront of nanotechnology, enabling them to contribute to Australia's new, high technology future.Read moreRead less

The dynamic process of liquids wetting and dewetting, as moving contact lines pass over solid surfaces is central to many industrial operations and natural phenomena. Contact line motion plays a key role in micro and nanofluidics, the foundation of an emergent technology called process intensification, where large industrial processes can be reduced to Lilliputian in size. Substantial energy reduction and other benefits are expected from this project, including the transformation of coarse particle flotation. Young PhD scientists and engineers will be educated in a rich research environment, with strong international research collaboration in areas of national priority.Read moreRead less
The flotation of oxide minerals using hydroxamate collectors. Australian and world mineral resources are declining in quality as we exploit the richest sulfidic ore deposits. Australian and world mineral resources are declining in quality as we exploit the richest sulfidic ore deposits. This is increasing our reliance on concentration and beneficiation processes to improve the economics of the selective recovery of minerals from lower grade and, increasingly, oxide or lateritic ore bodies. In addition, greater emphasis is being placed on our environmental stewardship and the need to remove hazardous material from the concentrate streams. This proposal will develop improved methods and techniques that will facilitate better, cleaner separations and recovery of the valuable oxide mineral components using Australian-developed flotation reagents.Read moreRead less

Australian exports are dominated by the minerals, metallurgical and chemicals industries, with minerals exports worth at least $40 billion annually. Many of the production processes are underpinned by the complex interaction between particles, bubbles and liquids. It is important that we understand the complex interactions taking place. This will enable us to improve existing operations and also to design completely new technologies, especially in the emerging fields of nano and biotechnology. This project is important because it adds to our knowledge in the national priority area of Transforming Australian Industries, and its success will ensure that our industries remain at the forefront of innovation and are globally competitive. Extending the range of the flotation process for particle separation. The minerals industry is a significant contributor to Australia's prosperity. Flotation is an important process for upgrading low-grade ores to high-grade concentrates, and for recovering fine coal from tailings. This project is aimed at solving a long-term problem in current flotation practice, the difficulty in recovering ultrafine and coarse particles, currently lost from production. We will pursue two new discoveries recently made by us, relating to the recovery of ultrafines and coarse particles. Benefits to Australia are of the order of $500 million a year in increased exports, education of high-quality graduates, export income from license fees and equipment.Read moreRead less
Mass transport in aqueous foams. Flotation is extremely important in the minerals industry, whose exports are $110.5 billion annually. This project aims to significantly advance understanding of liquid transport in flotation froths, via a quantitative study of foam mass flow mechanisms. If successful, it may lead to modifications to current flotation devices, improving their froth-zone performance and saving money, water, energy and greenhouse gas emissions.
