Robert Frank: Experimentation Across Film and Photography in Post-War America. A study of Frank's career will establish critical models that can be applied to the work of Australian artists and filmmakers – especially those whose personal histories are linked to the waves of immigration that occurred during the '50s and '60s. The publication of a monograph, journal articles, interviews, a DVD and the staging of a retrospective will increase public awareness not only of Frank's work but also the ....Robert Frank: Experimentation Across Film and Photography in Post-War America. The publication of a monograph, journal articles, interviews, a DVD and the staging of a retrospective will increase public awareness not only of Frank's work but also the work of those he has influenced. By including an overseas classroom element, this project also provides the opportunity to showcase the quality of Australian film research to high-calibre US students. This is vital to maintaining Australia's international reputation as a provider of film and media research.Read moreRead less

This project will make a significant contribution to the emphasis on 'Promoting an Innovation Culture and Economy' outlined in Research Priority 3 through its analysis of the important role film and television producers can play in the establishment of alternative public spheres. Taking Alexander Kluge's groundbreaking work as a case study, it will highlight the integral relationship between an active public sphere and the sustenance of an innovative and democratic culture in which the capacity to think 'outside the square' is fostered, supported, and appreciated. In doing so, it will internationalise Australia's knowledge base in the field, and place Australia at the forefront of international debates in Screen Studies.Read moreRead less
Sierra Leone and Australia: a case of the vanishing twin. By considering the settlement of Australia as a process within an interconnected global empire the project will increase understanding of our beginnings and inject Australian experience into international scholarship. It will increase our understanding of Africa, 'the world's largest unstable region', which is peculiarly absent from the Australian consciousness. Paul Lovejoy, our international PI, is a world leader in African history, and ....Sierra Leone and Australia: a case of the vanishing twin. By considering the settlement of Australia as a process within an interconnected global empire the project will increase understanding of our beginnings and inject Australian experience into international scholarship. It will increase our understanding of Africa, 'the world's largest unstable region', which is peculiarly absent from the Australian consciousness. Paul Lovejoy, our international PI, is a world leader in African history, and his involvement in this initiative will focus the attention of the international African historical community on Australia. The project will also provide an inclusive historical context to assist the incorporation of a large refugee cohort from Sierra Leone.Read moreRead less
Video Art Online: from UBU Films to the Present. There is little Australian video art systematically presented online, nor is there a broad set of reference materials on this important area of artistic practice in Australia. This project will create an innovative way to store, catalogue, interpret and archive video art works using open source software that will be freely available to others to use and develop. This project will create an innovative way to store, catalogue, interpret and archive video art works using open source software that will be freely available to others to use and develop. This project presents significant for Australia by:(i) extending the reach and profile of two of Australia's most important new media and contemporary art institutions, (ii) making available open source solutions for online video archives to the cultural sector (iii) providing the broader Australian community access to video art works in a scholarly, easy-to-use repository.Read moreRead less
Challenging the Bystander Effect via documentary film. This project aims to challenge the Bystander Effect. Social experiments from the 1960s have entrenched the view that in groups we fail to act to prevent harm to others in public emergencies. Film has played a significant role in promoting this theory. Drawing on an innovative screen performance method, this project is likely to generate knowledge about how bystanders can co-ordinate their actions to safely intervene; it will result in an inn ....Challenging the Bystander Effect via documentary film. This project aims to challenge the Bystander Effect. Social experiments from the 1960s have entrenched the view that in groups we fail to act to prevent harm to others in public emergencies. Film has played a significant role in promoting this theory. Drawing on an innovative screen performance method, this project is likely to generate knowledge about how bystanders can co-ordinate their actions to safely intervene; it will result in an innovative and accessible documentary. The project has the capacity to contribute to a reduction of violence in public spaces and more effective responses in the face of emergencies.Read moreRead less
Reinterpreting Milgram's obedience studies via documentary film. One of the hardest dilemmas we can face is responding to directions which go against our conscience. Stanley Milgram's 'obedience to authority' paradigm appears to show that most of us will comply. Fifty years after his landmark film 'Obedience', this multidisciplinary project will re-examine his hugely influential but often misunderstood work.

A novel API and associated algorithms will be developed to exploit the emerging technology of software defined networks (SDN) for improving the efficiency and responsiveness of interactive media browsing applications. The approach applies to conventional streaming video as well as more interactive services based on scalable media compression and communication technology, notably JPIP (IS15444-9) video. Recent advances in motion coding will be combined with new spatio-temporal transforms to develop an efficient inter-frame extension to the JPEG 2000 standard that is fully compatible with JPIP. Each of these innovations is important in its own right, but together they will facilitate a highly compelling interactive media browsing experience.Read moreRead less
Juries and interactive visual evidence: impacts on deliberation processes and outcomes. Australia confronts new types of security threat in the form of terrorist networks, sophisticated money-laundering and people-smuggling operations. The AFP and prosecutors are developing new display technologies to explain complex information to jurors, in the process simplifying court processes and shortening trials. At the cutting edge of this development are interactive displays, including computer simulations and 360o crime scene reconstructions. Judges will use empirical information about how juries use such information in order to develop appropriate guidelines for admitting interactive visual evidence, while court planners and architects will use the project data to identify implications for court procedures and design.
