Australia confronts new types of security threat in the form of terrorist networks, sophisticated money-laundering and people-smuggling operations. The AFP and prosecutors are developing new display technologies to explain complex information to jurors, in the process simplifying court processes and shortening trials. At the cutting edge of this development are interactive displays, including computer simulations and 360o crime scene reconstructions. Judges will use empirical information about how juries use such information in order to develop appropriate guidelines for admitting interactive visual evidence, while court planners and architects will use the project data to identify implications for court procedures and design.

Theory and applications of three dimensional fractal transformations. The purpose of this project is to develop the theory and algorithms for a new class of continuous mappings between fractals. Outcomes include a better understanding of fractals, substantially better algorithms for fractal compression and many new applications.
Global Citizen Deliberation: Analysing a Deliberative Documentary. The project will enact and film the world’s first truly global citizens’ deliberation, a global citizens’ assembly (GCA) on genome editing, and proceed to analyse the impact of the ‘deliberative documentary’ film on public understanding of complex, fast-evolving science and technology. It will investigate the cross-cultural capacity of citizens to deliberate complex value-laden issues, and so ascertain prospects for an informed g ....Global Citizen Deliberation: Analysing a Deliberative Documentary. The project will enact and film the world’s first truly global citizens’ deliberation, a global citizens’ assembly (GCA) on genome editing, and proceed to analyse the impact of the ‘deliberative documentary’ film on public understanding of complex, fast-evolving science and technology. It will investigate the cross-cultural capacity of citizens to deliberate complex value-laden issues, and so ascertain prospects for an informed global public response to challenges posed by genome editing. Research will test the effects of the deliberative documentary on viewers, examining benefits of communicating complex issues via the work of the GCA. Other benefits include improving public trust in governance and advancing the Australian film industry.

DomeLab - an ultra-high resolution experimental fulldome: This project will establish the first ultra-high resolution (4000 x 4000 pixels) experimental fulldome in Australia (DomeLab). This fulldome facility will provide a powerful immersive dome-based video projection environment. Partners will work collaboratively across three themes: interactive media, future museology and experimental humanities. Through the national research services AARNet and Intersect's research data storage infrastructure, DomeLab will extend pioneering research in aesthetic frameworks and frontier technologies to benefit artistic, cultural, museological and humanities researchers. DomeLab is designed as a touring system and will be installed throughout the country at leading institutions. Read moreRead less
Globalising Masculine Ideals: Chinese Men in Australia since 1980. This project explores how masculinity is constructed in present-day Australia amongst the Chinese diaspora and how these constructions have been and are being transformed. It follows from my recent research on the wen-wu (cultural attainment - martial valour) dyad as a Chinese masculinity ideal. This project explores how masculinity is constructed in present-day Australia amongst the Chinese diaspora and how these constructions have been and are being transformed. It follows from my recent research on the wen-wu (cultural attainment - martial valour) dyad as a Chinese masculinity ideal. My hypothesis in this project is that the traditional stereotypes continue their influence among the Chinese diaspora, but with salient modifications. The traditional primacy of wen is being contested when wen-wu is transplanted onto the Australian context. The findings, to be published as a book and articles, will shed new light on the evolving Chinese masculine identity.Read moreRead less
Utilitarian Filmmaking in Australia 1945 - 1980. The project plans to discover, document, analyse and compile a lasting archive of utilitarian filmmaking in Australia. 'Utilitarian' describes client-sponsored, instructional and governmental filmmaking existing outside the conventional theatrical contexts by which cinema is usually defined. Focused on the post-World War Two decades before the proliferation of video in the late 1970s, the project aims to highlight previously-unstudied aspects of the media industries. This is designed to deliver new knowledge of the skills and subject matter that sustained filmmaking, communication and education in Australia during a time when conventional scholarship assumes there was almost no significant filmmaking.Read moreRead less

The Project aims to investigate an interactive spatial aesthetic that facilitates modelling of operatic rehearsal design. It will do this through application of an experimental artistic system that reshapes concepts of spatial design through collaborative interaction between creative teams and digital systems. It demonstrates how creatives can immersively design a rehearsal in real time at up to 1:1 scale, assisted by an evolving database. It transforms our understanding of rehearsal design and the way it can be aesthetically explored, with outcomes that optimise and streamline design processes in the performing arts industry.Read moreRead less
