The world is facing unprecedented threats from epidemics. In 2014 Ebola showed that issues such as quarantine, personal protective equipment and improved health system capacity are just as critical as drugs and vaccines, yet these are under-researched. Professor MacIntyre is an international expert epidemic control. She will lead a strategic research program to improve control of emerging and re-emerging infections, using her expertise in vaccines, personal protective equipment and biosecurity.

Summary
Almost 1 out of 5 children in remote Aboriginal communities are hospitalised with diarrhoea caused by rotavirus. This study will evaluate the impact of rotavirus vaccination in preventing these hospitalisations. In addition to making sure that vaccination works and that those at highest risk are receiving the benefits, it will assess the indirect impact against other causes of diarrhoea providing, critical information relevant to the vaccine's broader introduction in developing country settings.
Travellers visiting friends and relatives: new approaches to understanding and reducing infectious disease risks. Travel is the single most important factor in the spread of infections globally and travellers who visit friends and relatives in their country of birth are at increased risk of infections. This project will provide necessary evidence to guide an effective response to reducing travel-associated infectious disease in this target at-risk group.
Molecular dissection of the functional regions of genes that encode actinins (ACTN2 and ACTN3) and their contribution to normal variation in skeletal muscle function. The project has discovered a common genetic variant that affects skeletal muscle structure, function and metabolism and influences athletic ability, and response to diet and exercise. A rapid and general means of in-situ pathogen identification would benefit the community by ensuring that appropriate treatments can be applied in the early stages of a disease. Patient prognosis is thereby improved and opportunities for multi-drug resistant organisms to arise are limited. Summary
The impact of the diabetes epidemic on individuals and society is severe but can be reduced by improving diabetes self-management. Conducted in partnership with Diabetes Australia (Queensland, Victoria, WA) and Roche Diagnostics, this research will evaluate the 'real world' implementation of a telehealth program, already successfully trialled, which has the potential to provide a low cost and effective program to a large number of Australians with type 2 diabetes.

Asthma is estimated to affect up to 10 per cent of people aged 65+ some of whom experience the condition for the first time later in life. Mortality rates from asthma in Australia are highest in the older population and statistics show that older people are most likely to be admitted to hospital following attendance at an Emergency Department for asthma.
