There is a desperate need for biomarkers and therapeutics for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Mutations in a growing list of genes are implicated as a cause of MND, although the way these cause MND remains a mystery. I aim to build a uniquely positioned research team that approaches this problem from a protein centric view and incorporating strategic collaborative efforts to the understanding of the pathogenesis of MND; the longterm goal of which is translation to biomarkers and therapeutics.

Summary
Disorders affecting skeletal muscle and the heart can have life threatening effects and lead to impaired mobility and sudden cardiac death. This project will uncover the mechanisms of disorders which lead to skeletal muscle fatigue, chemotherapy induced toxicity in the heart and heart failure. Understanding these mechanisms may lead to successful gene therapy treatment and to the design of a new range of drug therapies to treat these devastating disorders.

Summary
Increasing brain pressure after stroke or other forms of brain injury can cause further injury and death. Body cooling by 4-5 0C (hypothermia) for 12-24 hours saves lives after some forms of brain injury, but may have major side effects. We found that 2 hour hypothermia has a long-lasting effect preventing pressure elevation. We will determine the best temperature and duration of hypothermia in a stroke model and use imaging to confirm findings in patients, with a view to later human trials.
