Summary
Pregnant women in Australia are being inundated by advertisements from health food companies and health organisations to increase their intake of fish oil to ensure that their babies will maximise their chance of achieving a high IQ. Our study will provide the first solid evidence to test whether these claims are true. This will help us frame nutritional guidelines in pregnant women.

Summary
The anti-inflammatory properties of fish oil are well documented. Hip fracture is common and patients suffer significant inflammation, unintentional weight and muscle loss leading to poor outcomes. This study aims to reduce the weight loss suffered by hip fracture patients by prescribing an intervention of individualised nutrition support and high dose fish oil.

Summary
This project will investigate the influence of fish oil supplementation during the first six months of life on intelligence, language, behaviour and school performance at age six. We will also investigate how genetic differences in fish oil metabolism can impact upon these relationships. The findings will enhance our knowledge pertaining to the potential benefits of fish oil on cognitive development, and will inform future practice regarding the high dose fortification of infant formula.

Summary
During pregnancy, omega-3 fats (like those in fish) are deposited in the brain of the developing baby. Women get these fats from the diet but Australian women typically eat a diet low in fish. Because research has linked high fish intake in pregnancy with better IQ in children, omega-3 oils are included in some pregnancy supplements. However their effect on child development is not clear. This project will test whether taking fish oil while pregnant improves a child's IQ.
