2026 ARDC Annual Survey is now open!

The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure services including Reasearch Link Australia.

We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.

Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

Complete the 5 min survey now by clicking on the link below.

Novel Ophthalmic Topical Formulation Targeting Molecular Pathogenesis Of Corneal Haze

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $296,090.00
    Summary
Presently, no drugs are proven to cure corneal haze/scarring, major leading cause of global blindness. Haze is caused by eye trauma, infections or refractive laser surgeries. We aim to test a non toxic, novel ophthalmic topical formulation developed to act on molecular and cellular targets of haze formation. Toxoplasma Gondii Infection Of Human Retinal Pigment Epithelium

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $460,668.00
    Summary
Ocular toxoplasmosis is a vision-threatening parasitic eye infection that is common in Australia and worldwide. No treatment cures the disease. This work will characterize cellular and molecular events occuring in the eye during an infection, which is an important first step toward the development of more effective treatments for patients with the condition.

Ictal Characteristics Of Common Vestibular Diseases

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $281,573.00
    Summary
vertigo is a disabling symptom affecting 1 million Australians at any given time. Acute vertigo is associated with abnormal eye movements or nystagmus, the pattern of which points to its origin. In this project, we extract the unique characteristics of distinct vertigo syndromes to enable their separation

Neuro-feedback For Improved Efficacy Of Retinal Prostheses

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $653,655.00
    Summary
Bionic eyes offer the possibility to return sight to the blind. Existing retinal implants are effective at delivering basic visual percepts, namely brief spots of light. Our team is now working on building the second generation of bionic eyes that include the ability to both stimulate the visual system (the retina) and record its response. By recording the evoked responses, we can adjust and optimize the stimulation to restore a persistent high spatial resolution sense of vision to the blind.

Using Pharmacogenetics To Personalize Treatment Outcome To Ranibizumab (Lucentis) For The Eye Disease Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $623,891.00
    Summary
The drug Lucentis has revolutionized the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, one of the commonest causes of severe vision loss in Australia. Unfortunately, up to 25% of patients continue to lose vision despite this treatment. We will use the latest gene chip technology to identify the genetic variant responsible for this poor response. Having this information will allow us to personalise treatment for the patient leading to improvement in their vision.

An Evaluation Of How Well Brief Screening Instruments Can Classify Safe And Unsafe Older Drivers

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $877,030.00
    Summary
This proposal seeks to evaluate a screening instrument that will assess the safety of older drivers. The assessment takes less than 10 minutes and involves measuring aspects of vision, reaction time, and balance. We will assess this instrument in persons who are potentially at risk of being unsafe drivers due to visual, cognitive or medical problems. The instrument will be evaluated against the results of an on-road driving assessment and compared to other methods of evaluating older drivers.

Young Adult Myopia: Genetic And Environmental Associations

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $809,271.00
    Summary
Myopia affects 80% of school leavers in the cities of East Asia, 45% of Asian Australian school leavers and is probably on the rise in European Australian adolescents. Increased levels of education and lack of time outdoors are known to increase the risk of myopia. We will examine 2,000 young adults to find the genes that interact with these risk factors. In addition to confirming when these risk factors are most important, identifying molecular pathways opens the avenue of new treatments.

A System For Measurement Of Vision-specific Quality Of Life Using Item Banking And Computer Adaptive Testing (ViSBank)

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $831,155.00
    Summary
When evaluating medical treatments, it is important to consider all effects from the patient’s perspective; their quality of life. This project utilises new technology to develop an adaptable, computerised, internet-based system to measure the effects of eye diseases and their treatments on patients’ quality of life. This system will provide for more accurate, precise and efficient measurement than existing methods.

Brm And Brg-1 Protect From Ultraviolet Radiation-induced Skin And Ocular Damage

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $555,325.00
    Summary
Ultraviolet radiation within sunlight is the most important environmental hazard to which Australians are exposed. It causes cancers of the skin and eye, in addition to other forms of skin and eye damage. However sunlight also has health benefits such as vitamin D production. To protect our health from the sun we need to understand how it causes damage and the meachanisms involved. We have discovered a new pathway that we plan to study, called Brm and Brg-1, that provides protection from UV.

Anti-vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-B As A Biologic For Treating Eye Disease

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $464,295.00
    Summary
We plan to show that an engineered antibody fragment against vascular endothelial growth factor-B is an effective therapeutic drug for two eye diseases, corneal neovascularization and age-related macular degeneration. The innovative aspects of this approach are that it may be safer, and have a different spectrum of activity, than existing ophthalmic anti-angiogenic agents. Furthermore, it may be effective for corneal disease when administered as an eye-drop.
