Illuminating behavioural and environmental influences on human development. This project aims to investigate prehistoric human population growth by documenting nursing behaviour, developmental stress, and fine-scaled climate variation directly from the teeth of ancient children. Knowledge of the nexus of early childhood growth and ecological variation will shed light on modern human health and fertility, which in turn impact planetary health. Human dispersals and the early peopling of East Asia and Australasia. This project will address the most important question of contemporary human evolution research - the origin of modern humans - targeting evidence from ancient fossil humans through virtual anthropology techniques, human ancient DNA sequencing, and cultural evidence in the vital but poorly known East Asia region, focusing on China.
Out of Africa: human prehistory in southwestern China. This project aims to establish the timing and processes of human settlement in East Asia during the Middle and Late Pleistocene. Through studying a series of key archaeological sites in southwest China using the most recent innovative scientific approaches in luminescence dating, sedimentary DNA and lithic analysis, we expect to provide new insights into the human prehistory of East Asia over the last 300,000 years. Mithaka country incorporates the highly significant Channel Country on the eastern edge of Australia's arid centre. Preliminary research has identified more than 70 large site complexes that provide critical insights on how the Mithaka people adapted to this unique environment and took part in Australia's mos ....Archaeology and natural history. Extinct hominins and early humans on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. This project aims to research the archaic hominins of Sulawesi and discover when and why they became extinct. Recent discoveries of ancient stone tools on Sulawesi show that an archaic and as-yet unidentified hominin species inhabited this remote Indonesian island before modern humans arrived around 50,000 years ago. Forty-two degrees of latitude: comparative archaeologies of southwest Tasmania and southwest France during the last Ice Age. The late Pleistocene archaeology of each region represents the end journeys of behaviourally modern humans after leaving Africa at least 70,000 years before. They are similar in age, preservation and are important in understanding our species' adaptation to climate perturbations and the different cultural responses to these.
