Summary
The delivery of preventive care that aims to decrease smoking, risky alcohol use, physical inactivity and inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption is less than optimal in community health services. The study examines the effectiveness of an intervention in increasing the delivery of such across an area health service. The findings will demonstrate the ability of community health clinicians to routinely provide preventive care, and hence improve the health of the community.

This Fellowship should encourage high calibre Australian researchers to continue their work in Australia. It will give the resources in terms of people and research funds to develop to its full potential the population resource that I have built up over the last two decades. Funding will strengthen the position of Australian family and twin study resources within the international network so as to further enhance collaborations, knowledge transfer, and permit us to continue to demonstrate leadership. Continued funding of key personnel and the opportunity to recruit the best new talent through offering attractive positions, and funding to conduct our own genetic and molecular analyses rather than handing the material over to others, are essential for us to maintain and enhance the reputation in the highly competitive areas of cancer genetics. That is, we intend to demonstrate that Australia is the leader in the new discipline of MEGA Epidemiology. A major aim of this Fellowship is to use our research findings to “make a difference” to the health and well-being of Australians. We estimated that the avoidable waste in research - from design flaws, non-publication, and inadequate reporting - results in over $85 Billion annual loss. I will research innovations to reduce this waste. My focus is particularly on non-drug interventions - exercises, dietary changes, self-monitoring, e-health applications – which are often effective but more difficult to use in clinical practice, and being compiled in my recently founded Handbook of Non-Drug Interventions (see RACGP website).

Obesity and overweight are public health priorities. Population-level programs, campaigns and regulations are required to prevent and reduce obesity. How should these interventions proceed? What is effective? What is ethical? How can we avoid doing harm? At present, we do not know. By studying current interventions in detail, and working with experts and practitioners in health promotion and ethics, this project will develop a new framework to guide overweight and obesity intervention in future.

This proposal will address corneal disease by 1. innovative translational research for corneal repair and regeneration; 2. developing evidence-based management guidelines for corneal disease, and 3. by optimising health service delivery.
