Migration, Ethnicity and Workforce Segmentation in the Asia-Pacific. Globalisation has produced new polarised patterns in working populations, including ethnically segmented labour. Globalisation has produced new polarised patterns in working populations, including ethnically segmented labour. The related dynamics of work, ethnicity and labour segmentation have very significant long-term consequences. Systematic studies are available for advanced economies, but are far less developed for newly industrialised countries. This program investigates these changes in major Asia-Pacific urban-industrial centres. Innovative analyses from large-scale datasets and from strategic localised case studies will meet this shortfall in knowledge. They will also connect with more extensive ongoing studies of social transformations. Research outcomes and theoretical re-assessments will be presented in two workshops, and published in refereed journals and a book.Read moreRead less

The changing nature of national identity and its relationship to other forms of identity. By providing a cultural understanding of the relationship between nationalism and other forms of identity, this project sets the background for understanding the nature of Australian identity as we embark upon the difficult passage from a post-imperial peripheral jurisdiction to a potentially more open, generous and constructive polity. The project contributes to the recently added National Research Priorities category, 'Safeguarding Australia: Understanding our Region and the World' - not in the sense of identifying 'the threat' to Australia, but rather in the much more important long-term sense of understanding ourselves in a global, historical and comparative context.Read moreRead less

This project explores a supposed chain of connections between globalisation, rapid religious change, the fragmentation of civil society, and a consequent weakening of democracy. Through comparative analysis, a counter claim will be investigated: that certain types of religious associations flourishing under conditions of globalisation in the three countries examined are important elements in the regeneration of disturbed civil societies. The focus is on Australia, but a novel comparative analysis will help determine whether current fears about social fragmentation in Australia are justified. Resulting publications will enrich debate about the perils and opportunities of increasing multiculturalism in globalising societies.Read moreRead less

Australia's youth are moving towards adulthood in a society that is both ethnically diverse and increasingly reliant on information technologies. This project will investigate how these characteristics of our society are intersecting for young people, as they use computer-mediated communication to seek information relevant to their ethnic backgrounds and interact with others from their ethnic groups. The central aim of the project is to establish how this activity is impacting on the process of ethnic identity construction and young Australians' sense of 'community'. The research findings will also provide a broader understanding of young people's use of information technologies.Read moreRead less

This cross-disciplinary study investigates recent arenas of violence, from the genocide in Rwanda to ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, militia activities in East Timor and the War on Terrorism in Afghanistan. First, it examines Western public representations of these arenas. Secondly, drawing upon comparative political and anthropological analyses, the study tests its hypothesis that neo-tribalism and neo-traditionalism are best understood in the globalising context of insecure nation-states. This study thus examines the commonplace claim that assertions of primordial tribalism and traditionalism are the well-spring of contemporary violence. The investigation will inform future Australian and international responses to sites of conflict.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate what strengthens and hinders intercultural relationships among young people in rural Australia. New patterns of migrant rural settlement, while crucial to economic and social stability, have created urgent challenges to intercultural relationships among rural youth from diverse local, refugee and migrant backgrounds living under conditions of economic precarity. Using an ethnographic and longitudinal approach, the project expects to generate new insights into the conditions, capacities and identity resources which help and hinder intercultural relationships among such youth. The project outcomes will provide evidence to inform programs that aim to strengthen youth community cohesion in Australia's rural communities and increase their belonging to rural life.Read moreRead less
