Summary
Recognising the pain of others: gendered displacement, memory and identity in Bosnian refugee diaspora. The project examines the role of gender in forced migration and how violence against Bosnian women during the 1992-95 war has affected their settlement in Australia, Austria and the USA. The outcomes of the project will help guide the formulation of immigration/integration policy in these countries and facilitate better understanding of refugee women in diaspora.
Contested Politics of the New Justice. Restorative justice (RJ) and Indigenous justice (IJ) are transforming responses to crime by emphasising informal processes and community-based decisions. With growth has come contestation over the potential benefits and pitfalls of these new justice forms. In taking a global perspective, more imaginative responses to violence in Australian Indigenous communities will be identified. We cannot understand our entrapment in nationalism until we unravel the history of its complex inter-relationship with cosmopolitanism. This project excavates an understanding of politics and community that offers alternatives to the current global impasse. This project will consolidate the significance of Australian scholarship to a field that is critical to understanding our choices and destinies in a global society. Globalising Masculine Ideals: Chinese Men in Australia since 1980. This project explores how masculinity is constructed in present-day Australia amongst the Chinese diaspora and how these constructions have been and are being transformed. It follows from my recent research on the wen-wu (cultural attainment - martial valour) dyad as a Chinese masculinity ideal. My hypothesis in this project is that the traditional stereotypes continue their influence among the Chinese diaspora, but with salient ....Globalising Masculine Ideals: Chinese Men in Australia since 1980. This project explores how masculinity is constructed in present-day Australia amongst the Chinese diaspora and how these constructions have been and are being transformed. It follows from my recent research on the wen-wu (cultural attainment - martial valour) dyad as a Chinese masculinity ideal. My hypothesis in this project is that the traditional stereotypes continue their influence among the Chinese diaspora, but with salient modifications. The traditional primacy of wen is being contested when wen-wu is transplanted onto the Australian context. Based on an empirically grounded analysis in a rich qualitative data set revealing how young Australians see themselves negotiating family, work and citizenship, the project will construct the vocabularies by which young people locate themselves in the community. Whiteness: A Genealogical Study. We know so little about the white fathers of indigenous children and yet they remain a crucial part of stolen generations history. Bringing to the fore material about white fathers may further research on the possibilities of reconciling different historical accounts of Australian social life. As such, this research promises both intellectual innovation and practical societal benefits.
Children born of war: Australia and the War in the Pacific 1941 - 1944. Many thousands of mixed-race children were born in Australia due to a range of circumstances when more than one million allied troops were stationed here during the Second World War. These children are the embodied challenge to all of the nations involved, to provide the opportunity for a family background for identity and wellbeing.
