Smart Antennas for Broadband Wireless Data Systems. Smart antennas can facilitate accommodation of an increasing demand for bandwidth and quality in wireless communications by directing the antenna beam towards the desired user, while suppressing signals coming from interferers. The beam forming processor can adapt to changes in channel propagation conditions as well as movements of the user or interferers. Many algorithms for controlling smart antennas have been proposed, and usually there is a ....Smart Antennas for Broadband Wireless Data Systems. Many algorithms for controlling smart antennas have been proposed, and usually there is a trade-off between complexity and performance. We aim to find a suitable compromise to implement smart antennas for broadband wireless access systems and to apply smart antenna technology to increase the range of ultra-wideband communications.Read moreRead less
Demonstrating Advantages of Smart Antennas in Indoor Wireless Communications Systems. The performance of indoor wireless communications systems is adversely affected by multi-path signal propagation. When the received signal drops below a certain level, the usual practice is that the receiving station requests the transmitting device to increase its output power. An adverse effect of this action is a reduced life of battery of a portable transceiver, more power being radiating towards users and ....Demonstrating Advantages of Smart Antennas in Indoor Wireless Communications Systems. The performance of indoor wireless communications systems is adversely affected by multi-path signal propagation. When the received signal drops below a certain level, the usual practice is that the receiving station requests the transmitting device to increase its output power. An adverse effect of this action is a reduced life of battery of a portable transceiver, more power being radiating towards users and an increase of interference. The aim of this project is to demonstrate an alternative method of maintaining good quality communication link. The proposed method employs a smart antenna system to mitigate adverse effects of multi-path and interference.Read moreRead less

Recent advances in modern ultra wideband radar and wireless communications applications demanded high performance and reconfigurable Radio Frequency subsystems that simplify multiple complex functions using common hardware. These trends impose drastic requirements on passive and active devices. The reported performance of Radio Frequency Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (RF MEMS) switches, with extremely low loss and high isolation, microsopic, have lead to their applications in reconfigurable circuits. The proposal deals with the development of RF MEMS based reconfigurable devices that will enable flexible interconnections between various ports and channels and optimize the usage of bandwidth. The outcomes of this project will be of significant benefit to the Australian Telecommunication industry.Read moreRead less

This project aims to study new topologies for photonics-based interference mitigation filters for radioastronomy. Its significance is that it will solve, for the first time, the problem of excising RF interfering signals from within the optical signal fibre transport systems conveying radioastronomy signals from phased array antennas. These interference suppressors are key elements in removing strong unwanted man-made signals from terrestrial transmitters and satellites that coexist, and make the detection of the very weak radioastronomy signals extremely difficult. The outcome will be new high-resolution and tunable fibre-based interference suppression filters integrable with the signal transport system, which enhance the sensitivity of radioastronomy phased arrays.Read moreRead less
