Summary
Hysterectomy is the most common surgical [procedure among Australian women. Too many women still receive an open abdominal surgery, because too few Australian obstetricians and gynaecologists practice laparoscopic hysterectomy. This partnership will develop a model to systematically train practicing surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques. If successful, the model can be rolled out state and nationwide and also adapted for teaching future innovations in surgery.

Summary
Unprofessional behaviours among health professionals are common and are associated with increased patient dissatisfaction and medicolegal risk. Addressing these behaviours is a national issue. Ethos is a structured accountability system involving a process of early, non-punitive and tiered intervention and will be introduced across four Australian hospitals. This research will be the first controlled study to assess the effectiveness of the Ethos program to improve patient safety in Australia.

The Fontan operation is the last of a series of operations performed for babies born with a single pumping heart chamber (ventricle). In the largest research of its kind, the Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry partners with Heartkids, the parents’ association and the National Heart Foundation are intending to improve their life as they step into adulthood. Patients experience significant levels of both psychological distress and unmet needs during cancer treatment. This study will trial an innovative approach to streamlining best practice in cancer management through the use of Smartphone technology. Given the reach of Smartphones, should this trial prove successful, it will provide the basis for additional modules supporting specific areas of care such as management of chemotherapy side effects and treatment compliance.
