Summary
Strategies to minimise the societal impacts of zoonotic pandemics. The continuing pandemic has had unprecedented effects across society. Population mobility restrictions have been effective in slowing transmission, but are only effective while in place and have dramatic adverse effects. Despite Australia’s relative success, we have lacked a clear national strategy to guide the optimal deployment of such restrictions. Despite Australia’s relative success, we have lacked a clear national strategy to guide the optimal deployment of such restrictions. During this fellowship, I will use robust software development practices to develop a unified software platform that integrates semi-mechanistic, particle filter and agent-based methodologies. Designing liveable neighbourhoods to support healthy ageing. This project aims to identify whether neighbourhood liveability influences healthy ageing, and the extent to which this association is modified by individual preferences and socioeconomic disadvantage using longitudinal analyses. The research expects to generate new knowledge on urban design that supports healthy ageing, which is mostly derived from cross-sectional studies. This project intends to develop breakthrough theories for control of complex networked system behaviour via interventions of the link-rewiring type. This project intends to develop breakthrough theories for control of complex networked system behaviour via interventions of the link-rewiring type. New approaches will be developed for non-random, assortative and/or structured networks, which are poorly understood and difficult to deal with, despite being the real-world norm and despite their impact. The results will give new insights into epidemic outbreaks and their impact on vulnerable groups (e.g., elderly and indigenous), and provides methods to enforce resilience of infrastructure networks such as power grids, thereby providing significant economic and societal benefits. This project will develop the mathematical foundations for discovery and analysis of iterative methods for optimisation problems in distributed computing systems. Most methods in distributed optimisation were not designed for distributed computing, rather they were adapted for purpose post-hoc. By building on recent advances in monotone operator splitting, this project expects to develop a mathematical theory for decentralised optimisation a ....Distributed Optimisation without Central Coordination. This project will use an innovative method based on a relationship between the geometry of networks and a type of partitioning of the plane called an oriented Voronoi diagram. The outcome will be efficient new algorithms for designing physical networks, which, in practice, will ultimately lead to a reduction in network infrastructure costs for industries in Australia.

New Bail Regimes: Reconceptualising Risk to Reduce Remand Imprisonment. More than one in three prisoners in Australia are on remand, double that of two decades ago. This project aims to investigate how risk management in new bail regimes affects accused individuals experiencing social disadvantage.
