Summary
Improvements in human health can only occur when the best basic research is tested in the best clinical trials and then applied in clinical practice across the board. Practitioner Fellowships are designed to support people who bridge these areas. This Fellowship will support an integrated program of research involving laboratory studies in prostate cancer, clinical trials in prostate and other types of cancer, application to clinical practice, and high level clinical and research leadership.
The renewal of my Practitioner Fellowship will continue to facilitate an expanding program of epidemiological and clinical research in viral hepatitis, with a primary focus on hepatitis C. New directions will include development of international clinical cohort and trials networks, particularly to characterise the natural history of early hepatitis C infection and evaluate hepatitis C therapuetic strategies for injecting drug users.

Summary
My research program is focused on improving outcomes of diabetes and related conditions for Indigenous Australians through: (i) describing causal pathways; (ii) addressing health system change; and (iii) conducting clinical intervention studies.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease often diagnosed in early adulthood. Outcomes very enormously, from mild to disabling. This fellowship supports research to improve outcome prediction using genetics and to examine different strategies to optimise treatment outcomes and safety. The main data source is MSBase, which tracks over 31000 people with MS globally and is based in the University of Melbourne's brain Centre at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Clinical Trials And Registries To Prevent Blindness For Macular Disease

Summary
Injection of drugs into the eye is an unprecedented breakthrough in the treatment of macular diseases, however many questions must be addressed for our patients with diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration to reap the full benefits. My clinical research unit will conduct our own clinical trials, such as testing a new laser that has never been used in the retina. My observational studies unit will track “real world” outcomes of treatment of retinal disease in a large group of Australians.
Major advances in cancer treatment has been made by identifying gene mutations in cancers to which the cancer is “addicted”, such that turning off the effects of the mutations leads to death of the cancer cells. Grant McArthur has been successful in applying this principle to rare types of sarcoma bringing his work to routine clinical practice globally. In this application he will investigate targeting the BRAF, KIT and MYC genes focusing on melanoma, a major cancer problem in Australia.

Indigenous Australians face up to eight times the rate of hospitalisation for alcohol-related conditions. Reducing this burden will be key to closing the health gap. Professor Kate Conigrave will build on longstanding partnerships with Indigenous communities, services and health professionals to conduct a 5-year program of work aimed at improving treatment and prevention of alcohol problems. This will span settings including Indigenous primary health services, prisons and whole communities.
