Energy governance and climate change: towards a low carbon economy. This project aims to lay bare the architecture of energy governance, globally and nationally, in order to understand how such governance might best facilitate an ‘energy revolution’. Testing the Australian Megatsunami Hypothesis. More than 300000 lives and property worth more than $150bn on the NSW coast are vulnerable to large tsunamis but at present we do not have a clear idea about how often such tsunamis occur and how big they might be. This project will identify and date evidence for past tsunamis on the coasts of NSW and west New Zealand which will help us understand regional tsunami risk. This project aims to tackle the global problem of land degradation with approaches to policy design that combine qualitative and quantitative impact evaluations. By 2050 more than 90% of the Earth’s land area will be affected by human exploitation. Timely action is imperative in order to avoid, reduce, and reverse degradation, especially through land clearing. Developing a legal framework for Indonesia's participation in an internationally sanctioned scheme for reducing emissions from deforestation (and degradation). Global climate change is projected to have serious consequences for Australia. Innovative research to provide a legal framework for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (RED(D)) schemes in developing countries, including Indonesia, is needed. As Australia is likely to be the first country in the world to recognise 'offset ....Developing a legal framework for Indonesia's participation in an internationally sanctioned scheme for reducing emissions from deforestation (and degradation). Global climate change is projected to have serious consequences for Australia. Innovative research to provide a legal framework for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (RED(D)) schemes in developing countries, including Indonesia, is needed. As Australia is likely to be the first country in the world to recognise 'offset credits' from RED(D), under its proposed emissions trading scheme commencing in 2010-2011, the project will benefit Australia. The project will also support the Australian government's Global Initiative on Forests, including the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership with Indonesia. Building a green economy? The politics of green infrastructure stimulus in the wake of the global financial crisis. A considerable amount of government stimulus spending following the Global Financial Crisis was directed to 'green infrastructure'. This project analyses the successes and failures of several countries' green stimulus packages. Results will inform policy on future public investment in infrastructure that will be needed to address climate change.
Intersections between science and law: the implementation of threatened species legislation in Australia. This project will evaluate the effectiveness of techniques currently used in threatened species legislation in Australia. By combining the skills of experts in law and ecology, we will assess the role of science and scientists in decision-making processes and the extent to which decision-makers apply the precautionary principle when faced with scientific uncertainty.
